In the esteemed canon of Bordeaux vintages, the 2011 Grand Puy Lacoste merits particular attention for the steadfast poise and complexity it showcases. An expression from a year that presented a conundrum of climatic challenges, this wine from Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste proffers an enthralling narrative of survival, finesse, and maturity.

Climate's Crucible: The 2011 Mettle

The pastiche of 2011 in Pauillac began with precocious vine development due to a warm spring but faced a drawn-out battle with disparate weather patterns through summer. However, against such capricious skies, the fruits borne by the resilient vines at Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste managed to ripen with grace. Nurtured by the estate's quintessential deep gravel beds, the wine tells a story not just of pedigree but resilience.

An Oenophile's Odyssey

On the nose, this vintage unfurls exquisite aromas that hint at its journey — blackcurrant and tobacco intertwined with whispers of cedar and a minerality reminiscent of the chiselled stones from which this chateau takes its name. On the palate, 2011 presents an ensemble of complexity and balance; robust tannins carry forth a symphony that reaches a crescendo with flavours of dark cherries and hints of liquorice. Despite expectations for more austere expressions from this challenging year, our protagonist stands with an admirable structure and length that entices one's senses long after the last sip.

Cultivating Fine Wine Investment

For the discerning investor, the 2011 Grand Puy Lacoste embodies an intriguing proposition. It beholds not only the essence of Pauillac’s terroir but also stands as a testament to adept viticultural practices triumphing over adversity. With careful cellaring, one might marvel at its evolution as it unfurls further dimensions over time — an asset any collector would toast to.

In summation, this vintage telling of Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste secures its position firmly within the investment echelons through its savory amalgam of character, resilience, and potential longevity; a dignified addition to any portfolio looking for wines with compelling stories woven between their tannins.

The licorice, tar and spice character with dried fruits and currants impresses me. Full body with firm tannins and a chewy finish. This is even better now than from barrel. Better in 2019.

The dense ruby/purple-colored 2011 Grand Puy Lacoste exhibits a charming, open-knit bouquet of red and black fruits. It is a savory, medium-bodied, flavorful, well-endowed Pauillac from Xavier Borie that can be enjoyed over the next 10-15+ years.

The 2011 Grand Puy Lacoste is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot. It has a slight subdued nose that demands some coaxing and eventually, perhaps reluctantly offers aromas of blackberry, wild hedgerow, sous-bois and damp tobacco. I find it missing a little vivacity and precision. The palate has a crisp, brine-tinged entry with chalky tannins. Typically masculine and austere, quite edgy and tense, the 2011 is a straight down the fairway, quintessential Pauillac with cedar and strong graphite notes on the finish. Leaving it for another five minutes, there is a cheeky scent of orange that develops in the glass and then...poof...it's gone again. This is an intriguing Pauillac that keeps you on your toes. Tasted April 2012.
