By Chateau Mouton Rothschild

2007 Le Petit Mouton from Château Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac, Bordeaux

In the world of wine investment, the pedigree of a fine Bordeaux cannot be questioned, especially when it hails from the renowned terroirs of Pauillac. The 2007 Le Petit Mouton from Château Mouton Rothschild exemplifies a vintage that, despite challenging climatic adversities, managed to craft a blend replete with poise and elegance.

A Vintage With Character

The growing season of 2007 was a tapestry of extremes; an unseasonably warm April followed by summer rains demanded exemplary skill from the vintners. The deft touch of Château Mouton Rothschild's winemaking team is evident in their second label, the Le Petit Mouton. This vintage shines through with a delicate balance between ripe fruit notes and the classic tannic structure that Pauillac connoisseurs admire.

Each sip unveils layers of complexity that are hallmarks of a meticulously crafted Bordeaux. Red and black fruits interweave with earthy undertones and a whisper of oak—hints of cassis and cedar on the nose guide towards a supple palate rich with plums and cherries enrobed in subtle spices.

Investment-Worthy Profile

Savvy investors recognize Le Petit Mouton's potential for both near-term enjoyment and long-term maturation. While approachable now, the 2007 vintage reveals an underlying structure that promises further development, suggesting that patience will reward those with foresight to cellar this gem.

It stands as testimony to what can be achieved in less-than-ideal years, serving not merely as a supporting player to its first label but as a star in its own right. Investors take note—the 2007 Le Petit Mouton from Château Mouton Rothschild offers an opportunity to diversify portfolios with a wine that articulates its year distinctly while respecting its noble lineage.

In summation, the 2007 vintage of Le Petit Mouton from Château Mouton Rothschild represents an alliance of deliberate vinification techniques and the resilience of Pauillac's terroir. It's an opus born from adversity that calls for both contemplation and celebration within the sphere of fine wine investment.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Le Petit Mouton has a rather austere bouquet with earthy, leathery black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with quite chewy tannin, plenty of red berry fruit, orange rind and clove, building towards quite a weighty finish that perhaps just lacks the class of more recent vintages. At ten years on, this Deuxième Vin is proving to be longer-lasting than many expected, and even though it is surpassed by more recent, finely-tuned vintages, it remains a satisfying Pauillac. Tasted February 2017.

A deep garnet core. The nose is light and leafy: unashamedly herbaceous with a touch of tobacco and melted tar. The palate is medium-bodied with a herbaceous, Loire-like prickle on the entry. There is a lot of energy to this wine with a fresh, blackberry and blueberry finish. Very fine. Tasted February 2011.
