1998 Pontet Canet

By Chateau Pontet Canet

1998 Pontet Canet from Château Pontet Canet, Pauillac, Bordeaux

The 1998 Pontet Canet from Château Pontet Canet distinctly encapsulates a Pauillac of considerable charm and stature. Reflecting on this vintage, it's critical to acknowledge that 1998 was a year that favoured the right bank of Bordeaux, inundating discussions with praises for Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. Yet, Pontet Canet's offering unequivocally demands respect for its finesse in a challenging year for the left bank.

A Testament to Terroir and Tenacity

The terroir of Pontet Canet, with its deep gravel beds over limestone, plays a pivotal role in affording this 1998 bottling a character that marvellously intertwines vigour with verve. The climatic conditions of '98 led to an unorthodox ripening season in Pauillac, forcing vintners to execute meticulous precision in grape selection. This resulted in a blend that showcases the resilient spirit of both the terroir and winemakers' artistry during an atypical season.

Vintage Veracity: An Exceptional Investment Calibre

Now at its optimum maturation point, the 1998 Pontet Canet exudes a distinguished complexity. There is an enchanting bouquet dancing with cassis and plums underlined by subtle cedarwood notes which resonate with the assurance of classic Pauillac. At tasting, the palate is regaled with sensual layers of ripe black fruits, interlaced with earthy undertones and finely-grained tannins - a testament to the wine's sterling structure.

An astute addition to the investor’s cellar, this 1998 rendition stands as a compelling narrative of an estate's adaptability and expertise in drawing out elegance from adversity. While not hailed as the most acclaimed year, it exemplifies how even less celebrated vintages can transcend expectations through sheer tenacity and terroir-driven talent.

In conclusion, for collectors and investors seeking to enrich their portfolios with a testament to skilled winemaking in challenging vintages, the 1998 Pontet Canet proffers both characterful enjoyment and investment acumen. Its story speaks to the vivacity and resilience that are the dual hallmarks of top-tier Bordeaux, even when nature deviates from script – making it a meritorious candidate for connoisseurs and investors alike.

One of the better Pauillacs. Pure blackcurrant nose with a touch of pencil lead. Tight now but fine powerful black fruits underneath. Well-defined. Cigar-box. Good grip and depth. Excellent effort. Tasted March 2000.

A pleasant, dark ruby-colored, elegant Pauillac, the 1998 displays hollowness on the mid-palate along with notes of red and black currants, tobacco, dried herbs, and earth. Although solidly-made, there is not much depth. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2012.
