By Chateau Trotanoy

1997 Trotanoy from Chateau Trotanoy, Pomerol, Bordeaux

The 1997 vintage holds a special place in the pantheon of Pomerol vintages, noted for its early drinkability and supple charm. In this revered league, the 1997 Trotanoy from Chateau Trotanoy emerges as a remarkable entrant, offering a unique expression from this illustrious estate.

A Symphony of Elements under a Bordeaux Sky

The climatic conditions of 1997 in Bordeaux were marked by an early blossoming season followed by a moderate summer, paving the way for wines of finesse rather than opulence. The 1997 Trotanoy mirrors this climate narrative through its approachable profile that deftly balances maturity with vivacity—a testament to the adept winemaking that translates 'terroir' into the bottle.

Characteristic of the great Right Bank claret, in its youth, the '97 Trotanoy presented a confident array of dark fruits, intertwined with subtle herbaceous undertones. However, as it evolved, the tertiary characteristics have gracefully surfaced. One can now detect whispers of truffle and a hint of cigar box, woven into the fabric of mature plums and blackberry compote. The texture is nothing short of luxurious; silky tannins enrobe the palate, leading to a dignified finish.

An Astute Addition to the Savvy Investor's Portfolio

As investors peruse for wines that promise to stir the senses and hold promise in their value appreciation, few bottles speak as persuasively as this particular Pomerol. The evolution trajectory that the 1997 Trotanoy has journeyed through means it now resides at a point where it’s admired by both collector and drinker alike.

In the landscape of fine wine investment, renown comes with longevity paired with consistent quality. This nectar from Chateau Trotanoy is a paradigm of such reputation—a strategically sound addition to any investor's cellar. Its inherent charm today is matched by its potential for further graceful ageing or timely enjoyment.

In summary, among vintages produced by Chateau Trotanoy, the 1997 Trotanoy stands out for its delicate balance, evolved complexity, and investment-worthy harmony. It encapsulates an exquisite snapshot in time for Pomerol’s venerable terroir—a year defined not by power but by poetry in the glass.

This wine is an atypically structured, rich, powerful wine for the vintage, with hard tannin in the finish. Ripe and medium-bodied, with surprising depth as well as copious quantities of plum, cherry, currant, truffle, herb, and earth aromas and flavors, this effort requires 2-3 years of cellaring, but it should age for 12-15+ years.

A deep garnet hue with youthful rim. The nose has moderate intensity: cedar, antique shop, dust black fruits with a touch of freshly tilled soil. This does gain some intensity in the glass though. The palate is medium-bodied with sharp acidity, but harmonious with some attractive tobacco and savoury fruits. Tight, a little dour perhaps, but it has an understated natural elegance that serves it well. Drink now. Tasted September 2006.
