2002 Clos Fourtet
By Chateau Clos Fourtet
2002 Clos Fourtet from Chateau Clos Fourtet, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux
An intriguing composition from a chateau with rich historical tapestry, the 2002 Clos Fourtet from Chateau Clos Fourtet presents itself as a consummate challenge to the preconceptions held about the '02 vintage in Bordeaux. Set amidst the limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion, this estate's vines tapped deep into the mineral-rich terroir, drawing up its vigour even in a year that courted difficulty.
Vintage Prowess Amid Adversity
The harvest of 2002 followed an erratic pattern of weather that demanded both resilience and adaptability from the vines and vintners alike. Where lesser parcels succumbed, Chateau Clos Fourtet's vineyards stood firm, yielding grapes that have since evolved into a wine of both character and complexity hardly expected from this capricious year.
Delving into Depth and Nuance
Close inspection reveals the 2002 Clos Fourtet to harbour depths that belie its vintage's reputation. A palette seasoned by time displays harmonious notes of mature blackberry and plum, interlaced with whispers of truffle and tobacco – a testament to twenty years in repose. The supple tannins furnish a supportive structure without overwhelming the fruit's subtle decadence, suggesting a masterful balance achieved through deft vinification coupled with patient cellaring.
For the sagacious wine investor, an exploration of this particular bottle promises more than historical interest; it signifies embarking on an unexpected journey where resilience manifested as elegance within the glass. Its unanticipated evolution casts a spell upon the palate – one that captures not merely an echo but rather, the essence of Saint-Emilion terroir.
In summation, one must laud the 2002 Clos Fourtet for weaving complexity and maturity into its fabric as it evolved. It assuredly stands as one of the reasons to celebrate this defiantly surprising vintage. Whilst unwinding its story with every glass poured, it offers an exquisite chapter to add to any discerning investor’s collection. One would be remiss not to consider its addition when curating a portfolio that resonates with both history and quality – two virtues ever-present in this exceptional Saint-Emilion offering.

Scores and tasting notes
A strong effort in a challenging vintage, Clos Fourtet's 2002 possesses a dark ruby/blue/purple color as well as a sweet nose of melted licorice, plums, figs, and black currants. Lush and supple-textured, with an expansive, broad palate, medium body, and up-front, forward appeal, it will be drinkable between 2007-2016. Clos Fourtet is a property to watch as the ambitious new ownership is clearly attempting to produce the finest wines yet made at this estate. Fortunately, prices have not yet skyrocketed.

Tasted blind at Farr's 2002 Bordeaux tasting. This appears to have opened on the nose since I last tasted it, high-toned with maraschino cherry, strawberry liqueur and blueberry jam. Very lifted and pure. Medium-bodied palate, nicely balance, unpretentious, firm bold tannins on the cusp of melting, sweet black fruits towards the well-integrated finish. Just lacks a little length, but showing a little more promise that before Tasted October 2009.
