Chateau La Mondotte La Mondotte

1997 La Mondotte

By Chateau La Mondotte

1997 La Mondotte from Chateau La Mondotte, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux

The 1997 vintage for Bordeaux was, quite candidly, less than stellar overall—a year besieged by rainfall and lacking the sultry heat that pampers the noble grapes of this esteemed region. However, La Mondotte's tiny, high-density vineyard encased within the auspicious Saint-Emilion terroir has yielded a 1997 La Mondotte, of such grace and defiance that it emerges as a meritorious exception in an otherwise unremarkable vintage.

A Vintage Testament to Terroir and Talent

The 1997 La Mondotte is a composition that displays a profound understanding of its limitations and strengths—an orchestration made possible by the obsessive attention to detail upheld by Chateau La Mondotte. Nestled on the clay-limestone plateau east of Saint-Emilion, the vineyard's meticulous celebration of terroir comes forth brilliantly in this vintage.

In your glass, you will find that time has sculpted the intensity of '97's fruit to a beguiling elegance. The resolute tannins have now eased into a confident structure, cradling notes of plums and dried cherries, interlaced with the graceful ageing notes of truffle and leather. The earthy minerality and a suggestion of spice draw in those with an appreciation for complexity born from constraint.

An Invigorating Proposition for Investors and Connoisseurs Alike

For investors in fine wine, the 1997 La Mondotte stands as testament to the investment potential in less favoured vintages when borne from estates with exacting standards and fastidious care. There is vigour here – not in the bombastic expressions of more celebrated years – but as a refined undercurrent that persists with stately persistence.

To conclude, the 1997 La Mondotte from Chateau La Mondotte represents that rare breed of wine which embraces the eccentricities presented by nature's whim, to create something singularly compelling. As time continues its relentless advance, this wine facilitates an ever-evolving conversation between drinker, producer, and year – a conversation well worth investing both time and capital into.

A stupendous effort, and unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage, La Mondotte's 1997 boasts a saturated purple color as well as an explosive nose of blackberries, violets, minerals, and sweet toasty oak. Huge and massive, yet gorgeously proportioned, it possesses an unctuous texture with no hard edges. Seductive and easy to drink, it should be consumed between now and 2015.
