By Chateau La Mondotte
2007 La Mondotte from Chateau La Mondotte, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux
The 2007 vintage from Saint-Emilion is often overshadowed by its more illustrious neighbours; yet, amidst such understatement lies the true charm of the year. The 2007 La Mondotte from Chateau La Mondotte captures this aura of restrained elegance in a bottle, a testament to the resilience and adaptability of this prestigious estate.
Vintage Virtuosity: A Symphony of Subtlety
In a year where the climatic conditions tested vignerons across Bordeaux, Chateau La Mondotte's artisanal approach to viticulture shone through. The mildew pressures and variable weather patterns demanded rigorous attention to detail, resulting in a selection of fruit that was meticulously vetted for quality. The precision in cultivation is mirrored in the glass – an expression of terroir that speaks more of finesse than flamboyance.
Tasting Notes: Harmony and Elegance
The 2007 La Mondotte greets the connoisseur with a bouquet not unlike a matured library of leather-bound books; hints of truffle and tobacco beckon further exploration. On the palate, one discovers a tapestry woven with red fruits - think cherries steeped in an herbal infusion - fringed with an earthiness underpinning the wine's structure. The tannins have mellowed exquisitely, inviting an early apprehension of this vintage's intrinsic class.
The wine's time in oak barrels has bequeathed it with whispers of vanilla and toasted cedar, creating a finish that lingers like the final resonating note of a grand piano in an oak-panelled hall. There is maturity here – not merely age – that suggests the 2007 La Mondotte is entering an optimal phase for both enjoyment and investment consideration.
As with any contemplative endeavour, patience rewards the investor. In a time where immediacy often prevails, there lies a quiet confidence within the 2007 La Mondotte – a sterling addition to any discerning portfolio seeking a touch of intellectual élan.
Investment Perspective: A Vintage to Watch
For wine investors looking beyond the pomp of more celebrated years, the 2007 La Mondotte emerges as an intriguing proposition. It stands as a sentinel, reminding us that true value often resides in poise and consistency rather than pure power. This thoughtful vintage advocates for those who discern potential within subtlety and who appreciate the allure of wines that speak softly but resonate deeply.
In summary, Chateau La Mondotte has once again manifested its deft hand at coaxing out elegance from adversity with their 2007 offering. The eloquent evolution of this Saint-Emilion confirms its position as one of the standout vintages for those attuned to Bordeaux's complex cadences.

Tiny yields of 15 hectoliters per hectare and a typical blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc (14.5% natural alcohol) have resulted in a soft, plump, 1997-ish (which is drinking brilliantly) wine. It offers an inky/purple color, plenty of sweet mulberry and boysenberry fruit intermixed with hints of espresso and toast, and a textured, full-bodied, fleshy mouthfeel. There is lots of succulence for a 2007, and this soft, delicious St.-Emilion should drink nicely for 15+ years.
