By Chateau La Mondotte

2013 La Mondotte from Chateau La Mondotte, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux

Embarking upon the enigmatic journey of Bordeaux vintages brings us to the contemplatively stoic 2013 La Mondotte from Chateau La Mondotte, a vintage which delineates its unique narrative amidst challenging climatic variances experienced during the year. Unlike its more flamboyant forerunners, this iteration whispers of resilience and precision in winemaking finesse.

The 2013 Vintage: A Testament to Tenacity

The 2013 vintage in Saint-Emilion was not without its tribulations; winemakers faced a late flowering season followed by a damp and temperamental summer. Against these odds, Chateau La Mondotte orchestrated a ballet of viticulture to produce a wine that stands as a testament to the indefatigable spirit of this storied estate.

The 2013 La Mondotte unveils its narrative with an initial reticence, coaxing the beholder into its complex tapestry of subtle dark fruits layered with refined tannins. The palate evolves eloquently with air – a mosaic of blackberry, aged leather, and earthy undertones reminiscent of the damp terroir of its birthright.

An Investment in Vinous Artistry

This wine’s restrained elegance juxtaposes robust investment potential - a hidden gem for collectors who favour grace over grandeur. Its scarcity and unique expression within the echelons of fine Bordeaux render the 2013 La Mondotte an intriguing proposition for discerning wine investors seeking to broaden their portfolios with vintages that narrate the complexities of their provenance.

Diligent care will ensure the progressive revelation of this wine’s depth with cellaring. It is an embodiment of the climatic hardships it overcame - not by might but by the meticulous artistry and adaptability that Chateau La Mondotte adheres to unflinchingly.

Concluding Notes

In summation, acquiring the 2013 La Mondotte represents an embrace of Saint-Emilion’s aptitude for crafting poised beauty amidst adversity. Its moderate opulence is an esoteric nod to collectors who value rarity and character, promising a future where each bottle uncorked reverberates with stories both of vintage vicissitudes and vinicultural victory.

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2013 is deep purple with a gorgeous nose of black cherry liqueur, mulberries, licorice, graphite and spring flowers. The wine is surprisingly full-bodied, round, with sweet tannin, real succulence, lush texture and a stunning finish. This is a major over-achiever in even great vintages, but in 2013 an effort like this is especially impressive. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. With ridiculously low yields of 8 hectoliters per hectare, this nearly 11.5-acre vineyard, now a Premiere Grand Cru Classe, is situated high on clay and limestone soils above Pavie Decesse. The consultant who has been there since the debut vintage under the new ownership in 1996, is Stephane Derenoncourt. He has hit another home run with the 2013.
