Tasted at the 1999 horizontal at Bordeaux Index. Following Calon-Segur and Montrose, Cos d’Estournel has the most fragrant bouquet with wild strawberry, raspberry coulis, a touch of gingerbread and a little mint. The palate is medium-bodied, a salty tang on the entry and then impressive weight on the mid-palate: blackberry, leather, white pepper, dried herbs, leading to a dry, foursquare finish. I actually prefer the bouquet to the palate, but this is a decent Saint Estephe if not a great Cos d’Estournel effortlessly surpassed by surrounding vintages. Drink now-2018. Tasted June 2009.

The dark ruby-colored 1999 Cos is a supremely elegant effort. The wine offers notes of dried Provencal herbs, smoke, licorice, black cherries, and cassis. This medium to full-bodied St.-Estephe is cerebral, intellectual, and refined, but lacking soul and hedonism. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018.
