1998 Beychevelle from Chateau Beychevelle, St-Julien, Bordeaux

The 1998 Beychevelle from Chateau Beychevelle encapsulates the epochal character of a vintage that, whilst it initially offered a firm handshake, has now unfolded itself into a most gracious and cordial embrace. Nurturing the classic robust framework that St-Julien is renowned for, this vintage has aged with esteemed grace, weaving complex layers over two decades plus.

Legendary Year, Distinctive Excellence

In the course of my long-standing acquaintance with the illustrious wines from Chateau Beychevelle, there lies no doubt that the 1998 offering is one to be heralded. While the year was met with capricious weather, the château managed it deftly to coax out a wine of poise and density. Understanding the significant influence of terroir and climatic vagaries upon a vintage’s ultimate expression is paramount in recognising its place amidst an investor's portfolio.

1998: A Dance of Elegance and Power

The 1998 Beychevelle balances ferocity with finesse—a ballet of dark fruits orchestrated alongside earthy undertones, cedar and tobacco whispers, and a faint hint of truffle that has emerged over time. The richness encountered is beautifully integrated with matured tannins and reflective of a skilled vinification process, tailored to elevate the intrinsic qualities of this specific harvest.

A wine's longevity often speaks to its investment potential, and as one sips on this particular claret, it reaffirms that the months spent maturing in French oak barrels have bestowed upon it a silhouette that will continue to compel for years yet unwinding.

A Culminating Verdict

In summary, the 1998 Beychevelle bespeaks a matured St-Julien distinguished by its resplendent bouquet and layered complexity. It is an exemplar within fine wine investment circles, promising both delight for the connoisseur and reliability for the judicious investor. As time marches inevitably onward, this 1998 vintage proceeds to unfurl its narrative—one sip at a time.

This elegant, stylish, well-delineated Beychevelle offers finesse and beauty in a medium-bodied, firmly-structured, flavorful format. Red and black currants, licorice, minerals, spice, and tar notes are subtle, but persuasive. While it does not cut an enormous swath across the palate, the wine's acidity, alcohol, and tannin are well-balanced. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2016.

This includes a high percentage of Merlot (45%). The '98 Beychevelle is showing some signs of maturity on the rim. It exhibits a rather herbaceous nose, comparatively diffuse with touches of sous-bois and scorched leather. The palate is medium-bodied, light for a '98 with slightly raw tannin and a drying finish that comes all too early. A disappointing Beychevelle. Drink now. Tasted May 2008.
