By Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou

2002 Ducru Beaucaillou from Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, St-Julien, Bordeaux

The 2002 Ducru Beaucaillou from Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou manifests the St-Julien appellation’s remarkable resilience in a challenging year. The year 2002 bore witness to a bounty of perturbations, setting it apart from the generally more acclaimed vintages of its neighbours. Theg autumnal climax to that year's growing season was met with an amalgam of apprehension and relief by the vigneron community.

An Exquisite Emblem of Endurance

Against all odds, the wines culled from this formidable plot in 2002 are a testament to the scrupulously tended terroir and astute wine craft practised at Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou. Amidst a welter of weather-inflicted adversity, this particular vintage surpassed expectations, lending investors’ portfolios both charm and unexpected stability.

This is not without merit – such is the complexity and maturity that one experiences when imbibing the 2002 Ducru Beaucaillou. A tapestry of dark fruit – blackcurrant chiefly, interlaced with supple tannins and an undercurrent of earthy truffle – makes for an enthralling ensemble. Accents of tobacco and cedar emerge over time, speaking to the deft use of oak in modulating the wine’s intrinsic vigour.

A Portrait of Potential

The 2002 vintage is often overshadowed by its illustrious adjacent years, yet therein lies its unique investment appeal; it offers a rare blend of quality and accessibility, with an adept balance between endurance and current consumption allure.

In the glass, this St-Julien treasure unfurls gradually, extending an invitation to explore its depths. For those discerning collectors considering bolstering their Bordeaux holdings with a sleeper hit, look no further than the investment potential hidden within each bottle of 2002 Ducru Beaucaillou.

Concluding Reflections on a Resilient Vintage

The connoisseur's palate validates that amidst challenging climes, brilliance can burgeon. The measure of such brilliance is not solely captured by metrics or critic scores but felt in the living proof poured forth from each bottle. And it is here that we understand – even venerate – the 2002 Ducru Beaucaillou as more than just a beverage; it is a liquid ledger recording nature’s narrative in nuanced sips.

Tasted blind at Farr's 2002 Bordeaux tasting. The nose is a little disjointed, quite savoury and smoky, lacking the purity of some of the other so-called Super Seconds. The palate is full-bodied, ripe, tannic and chewy with a leafy, slightly green finish. I think there are far superior Ducru's than the '02. Tasted October 2009.

It is good to see this wine showing much better from bottle than it did from barrel, where it had a certain leanness and herbaceousness. There is still a hint of dried herbs in the classy nose of red and black currants, cedar wood, and spice box. The wine has a deep ruby/purple-tinged color, excellent density, and medium body in an elegant style with a hint of road tar and sweet fruit. It should drink well young but age nicely for 12-15 years. Make no mistake about it, it has nowhere near the size, dimension, power, and intensity of the 2003. Of course, this estate is now being run by Bruno Borie, the eldest son of the late Jean-Eugene Borie. He replaced his younger brother, Xavier Borie, who remains fully responsible for Grand-Puy-Lacoste and Haut-Batailley.
