2002 Saint-Pierre
By Chateau Saint-Pierre
2002 Saint-Pierre from Château Saint-Pierre, St-Julien, Bordeaux
The 2002 vintage from the hallowed vineyards of Bordeaux has often been clouded in the shadow of the legendary 2000 and 2001 years. However, for the astute connoisseur, the 2002 Saint-Pierre from Château Saint-Pierre offers a fascinating narrative of resilience amidst challenging climatic conditions. A testament to the skillful artistry in viticulture and winemaking that defines St-Julien.
Resolute Elegance in a Year of Trials
It is no secret that the year 2002 brought with it formidable trials for Bordeaux vignerons, with rain and cooler temperatures posing threats at crucial moments. Yet it is precisely this adversity that lent the Château Saint-Pierre its distinctive tenacity. The resilience of the vines bequeathed to their fruit an undeniable vibrancy and depth which, upon maturation, has blossomed into complexity.
Upon tasting, one is struck by the intentional balance between ripe blackcurrant essence and a binding structure of firm yet pliant tannins. There's a refined earthiness underpinning subtle hints of tobacco and cedar, speaking to the authentic terroir expression of Saint-Julien amidst an unyielding vintage's circumstances.
A Confluence of Expertise and Endurance
The finesse demonstrated by Château Saint-Pierre in tending to their vines during 2002's trials has resulted in a remarkably poised wine. While many investors rightly chase the more exalted years, the 2002 Saint-Pierre stands as a sleeper hit; its evolution in bottle underscoring the potential for profound maturation when left to unfurl at its own dignified pace.
This culminates in a vintage that possesses a stoic charm, unique to its year, offering both a signature savor and an enduring reminder of how stellar winemaking can triumph over mercurial whims of nature. For those looking to diversify their portfolios with a touch of vintage flair—one that narrates a story as much as it pleases the palate—the 2002 Saint-Pierre is certainly deserving of consideration.
As an established voice within this enological realm, I urge fine wine investors to revisit this overlooked gem not only for its investment allure but also for its graceful defiance against the elements—a choice addition to any collection valuing singularity and tale.

A very good effort for the vintage, this inky ruby/purple-colored 2002 boasts sweet, dusty black cherry fruit intermixed with hints of forest floor and barnyard. Medium to full-bodied, chewy, with high tannins and classic structure, this wine, like most St.-Pierres, will require discipline. Anticipated maturity:2010-2023.

Tasted at the Syndicat de Pomerol. The Chateau St.-Pierre '02 has good tension and vigour on the nose with crushed strawberry, mocha and a touch of white pepper. The palate has a dark berried fruit with good race, touches of leather and cedar prominent on simple finish that fades away quicker than you would like. Tasted December 2010.
