The 1999 Clos des Lambrays from Domaine des Lambrays represents a particularly compelling chapter in the annals of Burgundian excellence. This vintage, despite constraints of nature, has emerged as one of the cornerstones for collectors and investors alike—a testament to the resilience and deftness of the domaine.
An Emblem of Complex Heritage
In 1999, Burgundy endured a tumultuous growing season marked by capricious weather patterns that demanded both vigilance and flexibility from its vintners. Yet, it is in such vintages that the mastery of Domaine des Lambrays shines brightest. The terroir of Morey-Saint-Denis, with its conducive soil composition and climatic idiosyncrasies, has conspired to bear a wine of unparalleled character within the context of this challenging year.
A Vintage Crowned by Adversity
One cannot discuss the 1999 Clos des Lambrays without acknowledging the play of light and shadow across its flavour profile. Initial resistance on the nose yields to an opulent tapestry woven with notes of black cherry, currant, and subtle spice undertones—a symphony reminiscent of an autumnal promenade through ancient woodlands. Teasing tannins and a balanced acidity orchestrate a mid-palate crescendo that speaks volumes of its cellar-worthy lineage.
The palate reveals intricacies that have evolved gracefully over time: a mélange creating resonances with both enthusiasts and astute investors who can appreciate beyond a superficial quaff. A harmonious fusion of earthy minerality and mature fruit nuances bestows upon this 1999 grand cru a lucrative niche within any well-appointed cellar or investment portfolio.

The dark ruby-colored 1999 Clos Des Lambrays exhibits blackberry, cassis, blood orange, and spice aromas. It is medium-bodied, with a well-made candle wax, blackberry, cassis, and hoisin sauce-flavored personality. This spicy, extroverted wine is velvety-textured and appealing. Grand crus of the Cote de Nuits were entitled to 46 hectoliters per hectare yields (including the PLC) and the Domaine des Lambrays produced 45.5 hectoliters per hectare. My impression is that they would have achieved a more concentrated, deeper, and longer finishing wine if their yields had been more moderate. Drink this wine over the course of the next 10-12 years.
