Optimal Conditions: A Phenomenal Vintage
In Burgundy, climatic whims often dictate the quality and personality of its vintages. The 1996 season, characterised by a particularly dry and sunny September, provided an optimal harvest period for Pinot Noir grapes in the La Romanee vineyard. This serendipitous turn in weather condensed sugars and accentuated acidity levels to compose the stage for age-worthy wines.
The domaine, an emblematic steward of Vosne-Romanée terroir, proffers an expression in the 1996 La Romanee that interlaces concentrated black cherry and ripe plum with an underlying thread of spice. The pivotal growing season imbued this wine with a remarkable tannic structure, heralding longevity and promising evolution for those possessing the foresight to invest.
An Oenophile's Treasure: Structure Meets Silk
Savouring this 1996 marvel reveals layers of complexity; firm tannins have mellowed gracefully to create a supple yet robust framework complemented by an enchanting tracery of truffle and earthiness—a signature motif given by time itself. The vibrancy of the fruit persists, unfaltering, presenting investors with a palpable assurance of this vintage's prowess within their portfolios.
A pivotal consideration for fine wine investors is how exquisitely a vintage can stand the test of time. In this respect, the 1996 La Romanee from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair excels. As years stretch into decades, this vintage continues to unfold its narrative—one sip at a time—to reveal additional chapters of sophistication and depth that will continue to captivate and reward discerning palates.
In conclusion, investment in the 1996 vintage from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair channels one into an intimate acquaintance with a segment of viticultural history—an interplay between man, vine, and climate—that does not merely age but flourishes with dignity within the sanctity of one’s wine repository.

Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 1996 La Romanée Grand Cru was an estate bottling. Much deeper in colour than the 1995, the nose is stoic, reserved and has little to say. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, the fruit darker, blacker and more tarry than the 1995, seguing into a tannic, quite muscular, saline finish that feels brutish compared to other vintages. Plus, I cannot see it improving in bottle. Tasted June 2015.
