2013 Nuits St Georges Aux Lavieres
By Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair
2010 Clos St Denis Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru from Ponsot, Burgundy, France
The stellar 2010 vintage in Burgundy brings forth an exquisite expression from Ponsot, in the form of its Clos St Denis Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru. Steeped in the historical climes of one of Burgundy's most revered terroirs, this wine epitomises the harmonious dance between tradition and exceptional viticulture.
Reflections on a Celebrated Vintage
Ponsot's mastery is palpable in the 2010 vintage. Given the climatic benevolence of cool nights and warm, not hot, sunny days that 2010 offered, the resulting grapes achieved a balance seldom replicated. The old vines of Clos St Denis, with their roots entrenched deep within the mineral-rich soils, drew on these conditions to produce fruit of remarkable complexity and concentration.
A Wine Investment Gamut
The 2010 Clos St Denis Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru from Ponsot is an investment deserving careful consideration. Its scarcity and prestige are underlined by hallowed berried layers envelope the palate, offering rich notes of cherry compote and spiced plums. An undercurrent of elegant tannin structure melds with whispers of forest floor and a hint of truffle – a nod to the nurturing environment bestowed by the Burgundian earth.
The intrepid collector would be well-advised to allot cellar space to this debutant. Amidst the firmament of great vintages, the 2010 stands with distinction, promising potential for significant appreciation both in value and sensory appeal over time.
In Concluding Thoughts
To encapsulate, the 2010 Clos St Denis Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru from Ponsot embodies a zenith in Burgundian winemaking. As I reflect on its profound textures and sumptuous layers that unfold with every sip, I am reminded that such vinous treasures are not merely made but are born of a serendipitous confluence of weather, terroir and human touch. Prospective investors in this liquid elegance are invited to bask in its potential both as a financial asset and a bastion of unrivalled viniculture expertise.

Tasted at the Comte Liger-Belair vertical at the Château de Vosne. The 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Lavières has a gorgeous bouquet that sprints straight out of the traps: ebullient red cherries and raspberry fruit bounding about! The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that gently grip. There is a pleasing sappiness here with briary and dark plum on the linear finish. This is a classy Nuits Saint Georges that surpasses my expectations from barrel. Tasted June 2015.
