2003 Vosne Romanee Aux Reignots
By Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair
2003 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, Burgundy, France
The year 2003 was one emblazoned in the annals of Burgundy for its sweltering summer, yielding a harvest as unique as it was challenging. The 2003 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair stands as a testament to the estate's adroitness in navigating nature's extremities.
The Quintessence of Clime and Craftsmanship
Uncommon climatic conditions often spur winemakers to demonstrate their most astute winemaking tactics. In this regard, Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair epitomised mastery. While many Burgundian wines from 2003 show an inclination towards weighty opulence due to over-ripeness, their Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots reveals a compelling counterpoint: concentration coupled with elegance.
A Vintage of Resilience and Reward
This survivor of a torrid season radiates with a ruby-garnet lustre, beckoning with fragrances that interlace ripe red berries, seasoned humus, and an ethereal whiff of violets—a tapestry weaved with the finest threads of Vosne-Romanée’s terroir expressions. On the palate, one is greeted by an opulent structure without succumbing to voluptuousness. Its profile is an intricate lattice of silken tannins dexterously interwoven with ponderous yet poised fruit—the hallmark of a season captured in vinous form. It is this singular composition that defines the 2003 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots as one of the epoch's most distinguished pours.
The vintage speaks volumes for its investment allure: buoyed by scarcity and a burgeoning appreciation amongst connoisseurs who are eager to savour history’s rarer moments. A judicious addition to any discerning investor's portfolio, the marriage of rarity and reputational grandeur ensures that the 2003 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair will not only retain desirability but indeed augment in esteem as time graciously unfurls its qualities.
In conclusion, the 2003 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots, a gem cradled by an arduous vintage, regales us with its harmonious defiance—an embodiment of viniculture excellence that promises to grace cellars with its burgeoning legacy for years to come.

Scores and tasting notes
Tasted at the Comte Liger-Belair vertical at the Château de Vosne. The 2003 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignots has a not dissimilar nose to the 2002 with scents of mulberry, autumn leaves and a touch of potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, chewy tannin, although I find the oak a little oppressive toward the finish. The acidity is commendable for a 2003 and the length on the aftertaste is impressive. This almost touches the La Romanée '03 in terms of quality, but there are far better subsequent vintages. Tasted June 2015.
