By Domaine Georges Roumier
1995 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Georges Roumier, Burgundy, France
In the pantheon of Burgundian wine, the 1995 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Georges Roumier captures an essence of terroir that transcends mere words—they require one's full sensory engagement. This vintage, emerging from one of the most celebrated plots in the Côte de Nuits, narrates a story of climatic challenge and triumphant viticulture.
An Exemplar of Mid-Nineties Mastery
The mid-nineties heralded a clutch of vintages that displayed pronounced variances season-to-season, setting each apart in memory and maturity. The 1995 vintage was gifted with a growing season that leaned towards the cooler side, inviting a leisurely ripeness that brilliantly balanced acidity with rich complexity. This resulted in wines of finesse—wines capable of entering the long haul with poise and assurance.
The Unyielding Allure of Bonnes Mares
Typically robust, the 1995 offering from Domaine Georges Roumier showcases Bonnes Mares's characteristic depth. There is an admirable concentration here—a testament to the diligent stewardship of the vineyard’s modest yields. The bouquet betrays scents of black cherries and earthy undertones, while on the palate, layers unfold with dark fruit, iron-tinged minerality and subtle hints of spice—owing to judicious oak influence—that linger in its prolonged finish.
For investors seeking to diversify their portfolios with wines boasting longevity and pedigree, the 1995 Bonnes Mares signifies a wise choice. Now at a stage where its structure has softened into elegance but with plenty of life yet, its investment potential continues to hold pleasantly steady.
The Journey from Vintage To Vestige
As it stands today, this wine from Domaine Georges Roumier remains one of the quintessential vintages for serious collectors and investors alike. One can savour not only a glass but also revel in the narrative woven by winemakers who nursed their grapes through an unpredictable season to yield such splendour. In essence, the 1995 Bonnes Mares is a paragon not just in its year but as an exemplary study for those fascinated by Burgundy’s alchemy.
Whether cradled in a cellar as a beacon of vinicultural accomplishment or presented on a table to mark a moment of unequivocal distinction—it stands as an eloquent testimony to what can be achieved when patience befriends passion.

This was the first time that I had tasted the 1995 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru from Christophe Roumier. It is said that he did nothing wrong in this vintage and this splendid bottle attests to that (though another bottle was slightly corked). It has a bouquet that clearly evinces Grand Cru quality: a complex, nuanced aromatic profile of red cherries, blueberry, cold stone and iris, all delivered with quite brilliant delineation. The palate does not disappoint. It has exquisite poise, supremely fine tannin and delivers that opulence and lusciousness you expect from Bonnes-Mares. The only fault is that you will finish your glass too quickly and the current market value. Those with bottles in their cellar ... I am jealous. Tasted September 2016.
