Refined Complexity Amidst Climatic Adversity

The year 2013 threw an array of weather challenges at Burgundy’s vineyards, yet the astute vine management and exacting standards at Domaine Leroy culminated in a wine that transcends its climatic conditions. This Chambertin grand cru captures the essence of its turbulent vintage with poise and dignity; its resilience in the glass could serve as an inspiration for Burgundian vintners grappling with tempestuous seasons.

The palate is greeted with a layering of tart cherries and ripe strawberries, bound by a refined tannic structure which has mellowed exquisitely over time. Underpinning this fruit core are subtle notes of earth and an enchanting whisper of spice that pays homage to the mineral-rich soils it arose from. With each sip, secondary flavours unfold, akin to the unwrapping of a precious silk scarf - revealing nuanced undertones of forest floor and seasoned truffle acquired during its maturation in barrel and bottle.

After the outstanding Latricieres-Chambertin ’13, the 2013 Chambertin appeared sultrier and introspective, difficult to read at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, perhaps more backbone than the Latricieres but at the same time, its seriousness is quite arresting after the flamboyance of its “sister” Grand Cru. It is a Chambertin that does not quite want to get to know you at this absurdly premature juncture and it will require 8-10 years in bottle.
