By Domaine Leroy
2002 Vosne les Beaux Monts from Domaine Leroy, Burgundy, France
My exploration of the revered terroirs of Burgundy has brought to the fore countless wines that capture the imagination and remain etched in memory. The 2002 Vosne les Beaux Monts from Domaine Leroy represents one such marvel, a vintage that stood out in an era blossoming with viticultural promise.
A Remarkable Year for a Remarkable Wine
The narrative of the 2002 vintage in Burgundy is one of exceptional conditions, with climatic benevolence resulting in fruit of impeccable quality. Domaine Leroy, under the stewardship of Lalou Bize-Leroy, harnessed this potential to produce a Vosne les Beaux Monts that resonates with precision and grace.
Investing in Elegance: The Profile of the 2002 Vintage
On the palate, the 2002 Vosne les Beaux Monts expresses a kaleidoscope of nuances. A harmonious interplay between ripe cherries and asian spices is underpinned by a profound minerality distinctive to the Lieu-dit ‘Les Beaux Monts’. The medium-bodied profile glides with silky tannins, affording investors an alluring combination of immediate gratification and cellaring potential. Furthermore, the wine's graceful evolution over the years advocates for its place in any judiciously curated investment portfolio.
Ethereal rather than muscular, this vintage denotes Domaine Leroy's profound respect for letting terroir speak. It offers an intricate lacework of flavour and complexity that demands contemplation and rewards patience.
A Conclusion of Terroir and Timelessness
The lasting impression left by the 2002 Vosne les Beaux Monts is one of a wine deeply connected with its origin; a living testament to a luminous chapter in Burgundian enology. Its ageing trajectory suggests several more years of developing poise and intricacy, making it a prudent selection for discerning wine investors seeking to enhance their collections with bottles from an illustrious pedigree.
Investment-wise, proves itself as an invaluable gem within the world of fine wines – one that eloquently articulates both its year and its terroir with a finesse seldom encountered elsewhere.

The 2002 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Beaux Monts displayed a tensile, energetic bouquet that appeared to possess more focus than a 1989 Beaux Monts from Lalou that I had tasted a few days earlier. The aromatics are heavenly--mulberry, maraschino cherry, tobacco and a hint of seaweed, all beautifully defined and still surprisingly youthful. The palate is sensual, refined and backward. There is real vibrancy to this Beaux Monts, notes of raspberry coulis, red cherries and a touch of cola. It gently fans out on the finish, caressing in texture, refined and pure. I wonder whether this will actually improve with further bottle age? I suspect it has reached its plateau, but will continue giving drinking pleasure for many years.
