1997 Clos de Tart from Mommessin, Grand Cru, Burgundy, France
Embarking on a sensory exploration of the esteemed 1997 Clos de Tart from Mommessin reveals an exemplary tale of terroir and time. A vintage forged under Burgundy's complex skies—the 1997 season tested the mettle of viticulturists, producing a harvest that demanded precision to preserve the finesse synonymous with Clos de Tart.
Defining Characteristics of the '97 Vintage
The '97 growing season in Burgundy saw sporadic challenges, with an early start followed by a cool summer and rains just ahead of harvest. This climatic capriciousness was masterfully navigated by Mommessin, who extracted a vintage from Clos de Tart Grand Cru that has matured into a medley of subtle brilliance rather than overt power.
The wine professed an elegant structure upon release and, with over two decades in bottle, now unfurls itself with grace and complexity. Notions of macerated cherry and plums are lifted by threads of earthiness and herbaceous whispers—a narrative of sensuous refinement developed in the glass.
An Opportune Haunt for Investors
For fine wine investors, the 1997 Clos de Tart presents an intriguingly mature proposition—one encapsulating the essence of its storied plot. Mommessin's stewardship assures that each sip bears the gravitas expected from this legendary patch within the heartland of Pinot Noir.
Indeed, for collectors and enthusiasts seeking to diversify their portfolios with a storied Burgundian jewel, the 1997 vintage delivers both rarity and pedigree—one adorned in the subtlety befitting its venerable age. Such bottles are poised to secure their place within discerning collections that value wisdom over vivacity.
Conclusion: A Timeless Investment
As one delves into the vintner’s craft reverberating through each pour, it is evident that the complexities induced by the 1997 season have been transmuted into sophistication within this Grand Cru expression. The 1997 Clos de Tart from Mommessin is no mere drink but a whisper from history's annals: a testament to resilience in viticulture and a transcendent addition for those vested in wine's enduring legacy.

Tasted at the pre-dinner vertical to mark Sylvain Pitiot's retirement from the domaine, The 1997 Clos de Tart Grand Cru is the one to go for over the 1998. There is a wonderful purity and terroir expression on the nose with bright redcurrant and cranberry leaf notes, wilted rose petals and bergamot tea. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, fine structure and balance. There is tangible freshness and vitality here with hints of dried apricot and marmalade adding another dimension on the finish. One sip and the glass will be empty! Tasted September 2015.
