2014 Chateauneuf du Pape from Clos Des Papes, Rhone, Rest of the World

Presenting the epitome of timeless elegance coupled with unabashed power, 2014 Chateauneuf du Pape from Clos Des Papes is a luminary for any discerning wine investor. When looking back over my 40 years in the trade, certain vintages offer up such a profound sense of place and time, they can't help but be etched permanently in memory. The 2014 release from Clos Des Papes easily aligns with such an illustrious crowd.

A Year of Patience and Precision

The delicate balance of the 2014 year in Rhone was one marked by cooler weather, a slow maturation of grapes, and an eventual late harvest. This patience has resulted in a depth and complexity that sets this particular vintage apart. Each sip whispers of the winemaker's arduous journey that year, reminding one that true quality often comes from the rigour and precision during cultivation.

Chateauneuf du Pape is known for its robust intensity and characteristic Grenache-led orchestration. However, the 2014 expression brings forth subtler tones - surprising nuances that leave an indelible mark on the senses. There are hints of pure black raspberry fruit intertwined with a gentle sprinkling of Provençal herbs and spices.

A Wine Investor’s Delight

For those involved in wine investment, investing in Rhone wines often implies investing amidst stability and a reputation solidified over centuries. The 2014 Chateauneuf du Pape from Clos Des Papes offers more than this. It offers a chance to partake not simply in tradition but also in a unique snapshot of time, an extraordinary encapsulation of a year that symbolises the resolve of the vintner against the whims and caprices of Nature itself.

For all the grandeur that accompanies any vintage from Clos Des Papes, the 2014 Chateauneuf du Pape truly captures the essence of the year - a year of patience and precision. This is what wine investment is all about, partaking in a piece of history while enjoying an unmatched sensory experience.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to taste Vincent’s 2015 from foudre, but his 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape is certainly one of the wines of the vintage. And while it possesses terrific notes of peppery herbs, Provençal spice, kirsch and darker berry fruits, it’s on the palate where this beauty shines! Medium to full-bodied, incredibly balanced, seamless and pure, with beautiful fruit, it has present tannin, terrific mid-palate depth and a great finish. It won’t be the longest lived wine from the estate, but it’s beautiful and will certainly drink well for a decade
