Chronicle of a Vintage Defined

The preceding decade was often fickle, yet 1999 emerged as an unsung hero, exhibiting a robustness that laid dormant in its predecessors. With February's blanket of frost contributing to arduous beginnings, Pomerol saw redemption in a summer that bestowed an impeccable balance of warm sunshine and vital precipitation. This climatic dance ushered in a harvest that was both bountiful and concentrated—a maestro's touch rendering each grape a treasure chest.

Investment Merit in Maturation

Clinet's deft crafting finds the 1999 iteration exuding a bouquet where dark fruits intertwine with whispers of truffle and exotic spice. The palate is captivated by finesse—a tapestry woven from the threads of black cherry, succulent plum, and an undercurrent of firm tannins subtle enough to suggest their own retirement. As it breathes, it unfurls further complexities that nod to an assured longevity. Investors have ample reason to consider this vintage a strategic addition to any portfolio attuned to future value and consummate grace.

Clinet's 1999 is surprisingly accessible in the attack, but there is some firm tannin in the finish. The wine is medium-bodied with notes of licorice, blackberry/cherry/currant fruit, some sweet but slightly rustic tannin, and an excellent, broad mouthfeel. The wine is well-made but falls short of being exceptional. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2015.

Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index's Clinet vertical. This has a lot of glycerine on the nose that lends it a New World sheen with notes of macerated dark cherries, sloe, candied orange peel and a touch of cherry liqueur. The palate is full-bodied with dense, sinewy tannins, very good weight but not much in the way of finesse, whilst the oak is a little obvious towards the meaty finish. Tasted February 2011.
