Very herbaceous notes intermixed with loamy soil scents and a shortage of sweet fruit make for a very differently styled l'Evangile. The wine is somewhat awkward, clumsy, with some hard edges, and the high tannins desiccating the finish. My best instincts suggest that it needs to be drunk up before it loses more fruit and charm. Tasted at the property, the 1986 L'Evangile had a rather muted bouquet that did not really "sing" from the glass. It felt a little mute with reluctant licorice-tinged black fruit, savory in style but lacking vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft entry, quite rustic and old school, a touch of white pepper and game, smoky towards the toffee-tinged finish. This should be drunk up.
