1998 Montrose from Chateau Montrose, St-Estephe, Bordeaux

The 1998 vintage from Chateau Montrose demonstrates a splendid maturity reached by this noble St-Estephe wine. This particular year's offering stands as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the Chateau in a season that posed substantial challenges across Bordeaux. With vignerons contending against unanticipated climatic fluctuations, the successful endurance and subsequent transcendence of these trials is resoundingly captured within each bottle of 1998 Montrose.

A Vintage Standout amidst Climatic Caprices

Divulging deeper into the tapestry of its composition, the 1998 Montrose extols the virtues of its terroir. A typical Medoc vintage, heralding cooler weather than the scorchers to follow, this wine articulates such conditions through a tantalising core of rich, ripe fruit that aligns graciously with firm tannins and a balanced acidity. These characteristics are embodied within an elegant structure and discreet oak influences that do not overwhelm but rather support the complex mélange of flavours.

An Oenological Odyssey: Enduring & Enticing

The scent profile is an odyssey through dark berries and earthy undertones, commingling with hints of tobacco and aniseed—a reflection of the judicious cultivation and precision oenological praxis at Chateau Montrose. The palate builds upon this aromatic base, unwrapping itself like a seasoned raconteur to those patient enough to bask in its narrative—one where tertiary notes of leather harmonise with the remnants of blackcurrant vitality.

As for wine investment prospects, vibrancy lingers in this 1998 Montrose, suggesting its continued promise for cellaring potential. Knowledgeable investors are keenly aware that select vintages from prestigious names such as Chateau Montrose can enhance a diversified portfolio, and this poised vintage beckons consideration for collectors seeking out wines with grace and longevity.

In summation, the 1998 Montrose from Chateau Montrose seamlessly encapsulates the fortitude of its estate against Mother Nature's whims. It proffers not only an engaging sipping encounter but also stands as an astute investment opportunity for connoisseurs and financiers alike. The vintage's intricate grandeur—untainted by time yet emboldened by it—positions it as an enduring highlight within both one's cellar and one’s investment array.

A classic effort, the 1998 Montrose exhibits a dense purple color in addition to a sweet nose of jammy cassis, licorice, earth, and smoke. It is a powerful and full-bodied wine with well-integrated tannin. Given Montrose's tendency to shut down, it is performing better out of bottle than I expected. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030.

Deep purple colour. At first the nose was very tight, dusty black fruits and soot, turning more into dried prunes with aeration. The palate is very tannic as expected though I fear too tannic for the amount of fruit on the mid-palate. Quite chocolaty, that note becoming stronger with time in the glass. The finish is very masculine, dry and austere which is concerning. Will the tannins soften after the fruit has dried out? It needs another 5 to 8 years before entering any kind of drinking plateau. Tasted October 2003.
