The Semblance of Sophistication: Vintage Essentialism
2011 in Burgundy was a year that challenged vignerons. A capricious climate led to a harvest that was both early and unpredictable, necessitating masterful finesse. Domaine Georges Roumier navigated these vicissitudes with aplomb, curating a Ruchottes Chambertin that embodies the resilience and delicate balance of the vintage. Accented by vibrant red fruit aromas and an undercurrent of intricate spices, the palate reveals concentrated yet supple cherry and raspberry notes entwined with hints of earthiness and seasoned wood. A lively acidity contributes to its firm structure while seamlessly integrating with polished tannins—hallmarks of the wine's ageing potential.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Deeper and more limpid in color that its peers, the Ruchottes-Chambertin 2011 from Christophe Roumier has a modern, more exotic bouquet with small dark cherries, crème de cassis and crushed violet petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tension and poise, good depth but very backward and sinewy. There is plenty of matière here, although we will have to wait for the finesse and elegance because it comes across as taciturn at present. This is worth cellaring for 6-8 years.
