Nuits Saint Georges Wine Region Summary
Sitting at the southern end of the Cote de Nuits, 20 kilometres to the north east of Beaune lies the village, Nuit Saint Georges. The commune, named after the village itself is long and thin, measuring 15 miles from end to end but only two miles wide at its widest point, naturally fitting into the Cote d’Or escarpment. The production of wine in the Nuit St Georges “NSG” AOC is nearly exclusively red with around 97% (pinot noir) and only 3% for white wines. Total vines under management stands at around 300 hectares, which is relatively high for the region. The fruit is often lighter than the communes to the north with notes of cherry and raspberry, but most have an underlying smokiness to them. One of the top selling points is the longevity of the wine, even at village level they are capable of evolving over a long period of time.
Interesting there are no Grand Cru wines in NSG but there are 41 Premier Crus including the exceptional vineyards of Boudots, Vaucrains and les St-Georges; all produce high quality wines with excellent ageing potential. On the Domaine front, there are also some heavy hitters with key sites including Domaine Leroy, Jacques Mugnier and Domaine Meo-Camuzet. Whilst the wines may sit in the shadow of some of the big names further north, they are extremely reliable, interesting and offer excellent value.
