The 2002 Clos d’Ambonnay from Krug

Diving into the aromatic complexities of the 2002 Clos d’Ambonnay from Krug, one discovers a vintage that transcends the expectations of even the most discerning fine wine investors. Continually pioneering in the realm of rigorous viticulture, Krug, esteemed producer from the revered terroirs of Ambonnay, presents this exquisite champagne encapsulating their signature finesse and power.

From Ambonnay's Cloistered Vines to Investible Liquid Gold

The 2002 vintage was an exceptional year for grapes in Champagne: climatic conditions that were near idyllic graced them with superior ripening opportunity. It was a generous season, combining ideal amounts of sun and rain to produce balanced, ripe fruit. The stony ambience of Ambonnay's designeted Clos vineyard introduced a unique mineral accent deeply imprinted in this Krug masterpiece.

This encapsulation of time and place results in a sparkling extravaganza adorned with minerality, complexity and depth. That mysterious dichotomy between maturity and freshness is flawlessly preserved within every bottle of 2002 Clos d’Ambonnay from Krug.

A Vintage Worth its Weight in Gold

Inevitably, an exceptional climate results in exceptional wine. This vintage has been awarded timeless elegance through refined integration of fine mature citrus notes underlaid by subtle hints of brioche. On the palate, there is a harmonious dance between vivacious bubbles and bold Pinot Noir fruit that this particular region is known for.

The finish is elongated with an animating acid structure layered with ample fruit intensity which thus marks it as an enticing investment prospect. There's no denying that its longevity potential elevates it even further as an attractive asset — aging gracefully while swelling in value.

Navigating your way through the wine investment landscape can sometimes be as complex as understanding the multifaceted flavors of fine Champagne. However, judging by the effortless sophistication embodied within the 2002 Clos d’Ambonnay from Krug, this choice becomes as clear as its sparkling golden essence - it's compellingly investible.

After the 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2000 vintages, the 2002 Blanc de Noirs Brut Clos d’Ambonnay is the fifth edition of this splendid but rare and expensive Pinot Noir. Sourced in a tiny, walled 0.68-hectare (1.7-acre) plot on a deep stratum of chalk, the 2002 offers a deep, ripe and highly elegant nose with very fine cherry and red fruit aromas in the beautifully vinous Krug style. On the palate, the 2002 is terribly fresh and finessed, highly aromatic and very mineral, with great structure and a very, very long and tensioned finish. This is a taut and expressive yet highly finessed Clos d'Ambonnay that is shining brighter and becoming more and more complex the more time it has to breathe. Breathtaking maturity, creaminess and a brioche-flavored taste of dried and candied fruit characterizes this mouthfillingly round and intense Clos d’Ambonnay whose vinous charm and depth is teasingly attractive. Tasted in Reims, April 2018.
