By Chateau Lafite Rothschild
2002 Carruades de Lafite from Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac, Bordeaux
The turn of the millennium in Bordeaux was a period punctuated by many peaks and valleys in terms of climatic conditions, making each vintage its own complex narrative. And so it is with the 2002 Carruades de Lafite from Chateau Lafite Rothschild—a wine that, despite challenging weather that year, has emerged as a distinguished player in the fine wine investment arena.
A Vintage Testament: Triumph Over Trials
The 2002 vintage in Pauillac encountered testing times; a cooler growing season challenged the vintners to tease out the full potential of their grapes. It is a testament to the indomitable spirit of Chateau Lafite Rothschild's winemaking team that the Carruades de Lafite presents with such poise.
Alluringly opaque at its core with a slight lightening at the rim, this blend beckons a sip. On the nose, there is an enthralling interplay between tertiary notes—think earthy undergrowth and leather—mingling with vestiges of blackcurrant and a sprinkling of peppery spice.
The palate is graced by elegance rather than exuberance; this wine shows restraint and sophistication. A medium-bodied structure with well-integrated tannins leads to a finish where finesse stands more pronounced than power. Despite its relative youth, there are hints of maturity suggesting that 2002 Carruades de Lafite from Chateau Lafite Rothschild, with its distinctive personality, remains worthy of attention from collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Savvy Investment: Poised for Elevation
For investors looking to diversify their portfolio, this wine suggests not only a story of resilience but also the ripe potential for growth in value. The 2002 vintage stands as one to watch and hold—a classic sleeper that could awake to surprise delight.
In summary, the 2002 Carruades de Lafite from Chateau Lafite Rothschild underscores how even less-celebrated years can rise to significance. It's a sublime example of how meticulous husbandry and masterful winemaking can surmount climatic adversity to craft something truly commendable. This offering is indeed one for the discerning investor's consideration.

This is just a little sullen on the tightly coiled on the nose, though it opens up a little in the glass revealing cool scents of limestone and black plums. Very sweet on the entry, it seems to have more Merlot than other vintages, fleshy and ripe, blackberries, figs, and damson with a very svelte finish. Flavours linger with black cherries, mulberry and loganberry. Very easy to swallow, very approachable although it does not have the structure of the '99 Carruades. Drink now-2013. Tasted September 2008.

Similar to its bigger sibling, but leaner and not nearly as concentrated, as one might expect being a second wine, the 2002 Carruades reveals the Lafite fragrance of lead pencil shavings intermixed with red and black currants, plums, and a hint of cherries. Medium-bodied, with tart acidity, this is a wine to drink over the next decade.
