2004 Carruades de Lafite

By Chateau Lafite Rothschild

2004 Carruades de Lafite from Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac, Bordeaux

The year 2004 in Bordeaux was characterized by a somewhat unorthodox growing season, and yet the yield from Chateau Lafite Rothschild has bequeathed investors and connoisseurs alike a vintage with a paradoxical charm. The 2004 Carruades de Lafite is testament to the winemaker's prowess in harnessing the idiosyncrasies of weather to produce a commendable offering in the estate's distinguished lineage.

An Oenological Tapestry Woven with Skill

The 2004 Carruades de Lafite from Chateau Lafite Rothschild showcases a remarkable balance between ripeness and structure, a finesse undoubtedly earned through diligent vineyard management and astute cellar work. The season's relatively cool August gave way to an Indian summer in September which resuscitated the vines, resulting in grapes that achieved sufficient maturity to present a rather impressive blend.

Distinctive Expression of Terroir

Upon degustation, this incarnation opens up with harmonious scents of dark fruit intermingled with cedar wood whispers—a nod to the Pauillac's terroir imbued heritage. On the palate, one identifies the Pauillac typicity: an allegiance of tannic backbone and elegant fruit depth. Blackcurrant and tobacco notes cavort on a stage lined by subtly integrated oak nuances, concluding in a finish that resonates with suffused warmth and sophistication.

Investing in Refinement

Savvy fine wine investors can appreciate that while the 2004 Carruades de Lafite might not vie for the crown alongside Bordeaux's most legendary vintages, it is an exquisite encapsulation of Pauillac grace under climatic pressure. The poise maintained by this wine suggests it is still cradling untapped potential for those patient enough to steward it through maturation.

As this vintage now graces our palates, its unique position in the market is clear; the 2004 Carruades de Lafite provides an alternative investment avenue for those looking to diversify with a classic wine that embeds both history and terroir-driven quality. This wine remains one of deliberation for collectors seeking to enrich their portfolio with a vintage that can offer both pleasure and performance.

Lafite's second wine has become stronger over recent vintages as the selection for the grand vin has become Draconian under administrator Charles Chevalier. The dense ruby/purple-tinged 2004 Carruades de Lafite (48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) exhibits sweet, crunchy, savory, black cherry, and raspberry fruit along with hints of road tar, spring flowers, and a touch of minerality. Give it 1-2 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 12-13.

A deep opaque purple colour. Quite rich and plummy on the nose with some cassis note developing. Again, plummy on the palate, smooth but lacks some cohesion and breeding. Quite abrupt on the finish. Expected more. Tasted April 2005.
