The 2007 Mouton Rothschild from Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac, Bordeaux
Exemplifying the resilience of Bordeaux's élite viticultural craftsmanship, the 2007 Mouton Rothschild from Chateau Mouton Rothschild emerges as a testament to the potential housed within a challenging vintage. With this year marked by a capricious climate that tempered enthusiasm in its early stages, diligent and masterful winemaking has deftly sculpted a wine of unexpected depth and nuance.
A Vintage That Inspires Respect
Indeed, within the annals of Pauillac's prestigious lineage, the 2007 vintage may not have been heralded upon release with the clamour of its more famed brethren. Yet, time has lent this offering a dignified complexity that commands attention from collectors and connoisseurs alike. A closer examination reveals how Mouton Rothschild managed to wield an unfavourable season to their advantage, delivering a wine with balance and sophistication.
Orchestrating an Oenological Surprise
The tasting notes for the 2007 Mouton Rothschild carry whispers of fresh cassis and blackberry; these primary elements now mature into an elegant symphony accompanied by subtle hints of tobacco and earthy undertones. The tannins, once pert and vivid in their youth, have softened into a silky embrace that meshes harmoniously with the wine's structured acidity. The finish is protracted and reverberates with a subtle yet distinctive minerality.
For the astute wine investor, this particular bottle presents an intriguing narrative—a demonstration of the calibre achievable by a prominent chateau under less favourable zephyrs. Its performance is a reminder of how excellence may still flourish under duress and offers diversification within a well-curated portfolio. The 2007 Mouton Rothschild, maturing gracefully, continues to accrue value and intrigue amongst collectors.
Conclusion: An Investment in Patience and Elegance
In closing, the allure of the 2007 Mouton Rothschild lies in its confluence of maturity and preserved vivacity—an unexpected treasure from a vintage that keeps revealing new facets. It stands prominently as one of those rare instances where patience and expertise triumphed over adversity, resulting in an investment-grade wine that surprises and delights with each cork unfurled.

Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. The Mouton-Rothschild 2007 is very reserved on the nose with graphite and sous-bois: good definition, quite aristocratic and stoic. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of spice on the entry, supple tannins with good weight, quite “juicy” towards the finish (less chewy than previous bottles) with notes of boysenberry and wild strawberry, then a gentle but firm grip on the dry finish. This needs time but if is very commendable given the challenges of the growing season. Tasted January 2011.

Composed of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, the deep purple-colored 2007 Mouton reveals sweet aromas of creme de cassis, subtle oak, and flowers. Medium to full-bodied and elegant with sweet tannin as well as flavors and a texture that build incrementally on the palate, this strong effort should evolve over the next 15 years.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Mouton-Rothschild offers classic tobacco and cigar box aromas on the nose, very well defined with black fruit unfolding in the glass. Again, like the bottle at the vertical in May last year, there is an element of Pessac-Léognan on the nose, just a hint of warm gravel. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite compact with a foursquare finish of blackberry, tobacco and a pinch of white pepper. Sure, it is shorter than most recent vintages, but I can see this aging with style. Tasted February 2017.
