2002 Pichon Baron
By Chateau Pichon Baron
2002 Pichon Baron from Château Pichon Baron, Pauillac, Bordeaux
In the arena of Bordeaux's esteemed vineyard quartet, the 2002 Pichon Baron makes a commendable stand. The challenge posed by a cooler-than-usual growing season imbued this vintage with character as singular as the château’s architectural grace.
A Testament to Terroir and Tenacity
Despite the hurdles of 2002's temperamental climatic conditions, Château Pichon Baron has masterfully sculpted a wine that is at once resilient and revealing. The pronounced tannic structure – a quintessential attribute of Pauillac's charm – cradles dark fruit and earthy undertones. It whispers tales of the gravel beds that nurture the roots from whence it came.
The prevailing cabernet sauvignon in this blend stands proudly, offering investors and connoisseurs alike a snapshot into the adaptations necessitated by this year’s conditions. At its side, merlot softens the experience, whilst petit verdot contributes nuanced complexity. Each sip evokes an understanding of the meticulous labor invested into harnessing Pauillac’s diversity amidst an unwieldy year.
Cerebral Complexity Meets Investment Acumen
For those impassioned by wine investment, 2002 Pichon Baron emerges as a cerebral choice. Admirers of Château Pichon Baron will identify not only the lineage but also the distinct signature of the year. This is a vintage that commands attention for its capacity to evolve, promising a narrative that unfolds with time.
The thoughtful combination of fruit, terroir-driven minerality, and skillful oak integration means that this wine, while somewhat overshadowed by the fabled vintages that preceded it, holds an understated elegance. Over time it assures transformation in complexity; it is a journey on which every investor should embark.
In conclusion, despite what many may have considered an off-year for Bordeaux, the 2002 Pichon Baron proves that exceptional winemaking can triumph even under less than ideal circumstances. Its unfolding layers are reminiscent of peeling away pages from an old Bordeaux almanac—each leaf more interesting than the last. A treasure such as this – for your portfolio or cellar – is deserving of earnest contemplation.

Scores and tasting notes
Tasted blind at Farr's 2002 Bordeaux tasting. Very good definition on the nose: blackberry, melted tar, cedar-wood and a touch of smoke. The palate is ripe with solid tannins, a touch of austerity lending it a masculine persona, backward towards the finish with notes of blackberry leaf and pencil lead. Good length but a little aloof at the moment. Tasted October 2009.
Neal Martin - Wine Journal Jan 2010
This is an elegant, deep ruby-colored wine with notes of sweet cassis, cedar wood, and tobacco with a hint of chocolate in the background. It is a layered, moderately weighty wine with pretty, even understated fruit flavors, excellent concentration, and a long finish with relatively ripe tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2016.
