1997 Domaine de Chevalier from Chateau Domaine de Chevalier, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux

The 1997 vintage of the noble Domaine de Chevalier from Chateau Domaine de Chevalier is a wine that resonates with an almost whimsical complexity. This vintage has been a topic of discussion amongst oenophiles and investors alike. Known for its prodigious ability to age gracefully, this edition presents itself as a multifaceted jewel in the crown of Bordeaux's celebrated terroirs. My experience with this estate runs deep, witnessing their offerings across many a season.

The Persona of the 1997 Vintage

Intriguingly, the year 1997 did not sweep across Bordeaux with the same climatic grandeur as its neighbouring years; rather, it was a vintage that carefully etched its own path. Wrapped in this bottle is the essence of Pessac-Leognan's gravelly soils and tempered maritime climate, manifesting in thinner skins and a lighter body than more robust years. Yet, do not be fooled into thinking that our 1997 Domaine de Chevalier lacks any facet of tenacity.

The nuanced nose betrays hints of truffle intermingled with ripe red fruits, evoking the romantic decay of autumnal underbrush. There is a maturity here that beckons to the taster—a dignified integration of wood smoke and leather notes that whisper tales of its storied development over time.

Investment Potential: A Quiet Assurance

While various vintages may shout louder in terms of power or concentration, the 1997 Domaine de Chevalier holds its value in mature refinement and subtle evolution. It stands as one to watch for investors seeking approachable maturity without sacrificing depth or quality—a testament to the dedication of Chateau Domaine de Chevalier to their craft.

In conclusion, as we allow the conversation on investment-grade wines to traverse both iconic vintages and those 'sleeper years', this fine wine embodies an understated elegance. There's an earnestness in its storytelling capacity that correlates with alluring investment potential. The clever collector recognises the timeless charm and poised character nestled within each cork-sealed treasure trove such as the 1997 Domaine de Chevalier.

Medium light ruby-colored, with sweet, smoky, herb-tinged, toasty, cherry, and berry flavors, this is an attractive, light to medium-bodied wine with soft tannin, low acidity, and little depth or finish. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.

Lovely dark red colour. Firm sturdy tannins and lots of structure with cedary/floral notes. But he mid-palate seems a bit hollow, lacking concentration with the finish very woody and mean. Tasted twice with consistent notes. Tasted April 1998.
