By Chateau Domaine de Chevalier
2007 Domaine de Chevalier from Chateau Domaine de Chevalier, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux
The 2007 vintage at the illustrious Pessac-Leognan estate of Chateau Domaine de Chevalier presents as a tapestry of complexity and grace. This particular year stands as a testament to the winemaking prowess of the region, producing an exceptional wine in what was widely considered a challenging season.
A Unique Expression amidst Climatic Challenge
Bordeaux was not favoured by fortune in 2007, with a fickle climate leading to uneven ripening across the board. As sharp fluctuations bewitched the growing season, Chateau Domaine de Chevalier rose admirably to the challenge. By astute vineyard management and selective harvesting, they sculpted a wine that defied the year's trials, imbuing it with a structured elegance.
The 2007 Domaine de Chevalier distinguishes itself with its vibrant acidity and aromatic finesse. An adroit balance between ripe fruit and savoury complexity gives this claret its notable depth. On the palate lie layered flavours of blackcurrant, tobacco leaf and a whisper of truffle - a symphony that rewards the connoisseur with each contemplative sip.
An Investment in Enduring Quality
In terms of investment, the significance of this wine lies within its resilient character and the skill with which it was crafted. With secondary characteristics now emerging as primary fruit recedes, discerning investors will note how this Pessac-Leognan jewel is poised to evolve further over time.
Subtly firm tannins suggest that it has yet begun to unfurl its full potential. The 2007 Domaine de Chevalier represents an intriguing endeavour for those investing in wines that tell a story of adversity conquered with finesse.
In Summary: The Triumph of Artisanship
In conclusion, the 2007 vintage from Chateau Domaine de Chevalier remains one of tenacity and triumph. It is a polished exemplar of what insightful viticulture can achieve in Bordeaux's Pessac-Leognan appellation, even when nature provides a less than perfect canvas. For both collector and investor alike, this vintage holds an allure not just because of its inherent quality, but as an embodiment of resilience in fine winemaking.

This is surprisingly soft and open now with Indian spices, berries and sweet tobacco. It's full and round with melted and round tannins. Perfect with Korean barbecue.

One of the vintage's top successes, this blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot exhibits a juicy, black currant, forest floor, and soil-scented nose. Layered with brilliant precision, purity, and density, it is a medium to full-bodied, elegant, intensely flavored, soft, upfront blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It should drink well for 10-15 years.

Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. A good but not great 2007 from Olivier Bernard and his team. Here, the 2007 has quite a sweet blackberry and raspberry coulis nose with a touch of creme de cassis. At present, it is too dominated by the oak but this may subsume with time. The palate is medium-bodied with rather forced tannins, a little tough but it melts nicely to a plush pure finish. I feel that it would have improved with aeration and of course, bottle age, hence my optimistic plus sign. Tasted January 2011.
