2007 Le Clarence de Haut Brion
By Chateau Haut Brion
2007 Le Clarence de Haut Brion from Chateau Haut Brion, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux
The 2007 vintage carries a narrative of climatic tension—a season wrought with challenges that, ultimately, the venerable Chateau Haut Brion has artfully transcended. This precarious balance between nature's caprices and human endeavour has culminated in the creation of the refined 2007 Le Clarence de Haut Brion—a testament to the resilience and adaptability of one of Bordeaux's most esteemed estates.
Distinguished Pedigree, Unwavering Quality
The 2007 Le Clarence de Haut Brion unfurls as an embodiment of its older sibling, the Grand Vin, with a character defined by the unique terroir of Pessac-Leognan. The earthy backbone synonymous with Haut Brion is evident, showcasing a medley of ripe fruits and well-integrated oak that whispers of expert vinification at every turn.
An Emblematic Pessac-Leognan Vintage
The hallmark of the 2007 vintage in this noble terroir lies in its finesse rather than power. A refined display of complexity without heft is evident in this release from Chateau Haut Brion. Cooling Atlantic influences and meticulous vineyard management yielded a wine that offers investors an opportunity to possess an expression defined by elegance and poise. Leather-touched dark cherry on the nose yields to a palate framed by silk-soft tannins, suggesting a maturity that invites immediate appreciation.
As a wine investment piece, the 2007 Le Clarence de Haut Brion merits consideration for its demonstration of balance and refinement during a year when such virtues were hard-won. It holds within its depths an intimate knowledge of Pessac-Leognan's diverse micro-climates, their soils cradling the roots that bore this wine to fruition.
For connoisseurs and investors alike, acquiring bottles or cases of this particular vintage could not only enhance a collection but also serve as a compelling prologue to the storied capabilities of Chateau Haut Brion under testing conditions—with each glass narrating a year filled with subtle triumphs over nature's trials.

Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. A superb showing that surpassed my expectations out of barrel. Here, the second wine of Haut-Brion has a lifted, minty bouquet with touches of blackberry, liquorice and cassis all with very fine definition. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, good depth with chunky black liquorice-tinged fruit towards the finish. Excellent. Tasted January 2011.

Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 2007 Bordeaux tasting. The debut 2007 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion has more vigor than the 2007 Les Carmes Haut-Brion; red dusky fruit, warm gravel and a touch of leather opens nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, almost Pomerol-like in style with a fresh, savory, bacon fat-tinged finish. I would drink this now rather than later. Tasted March 2015.

The 2007 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion (formerly called Bahans Haut-Brion) possesses sweet and sour cherry, damp earth, spice box, smoke, and forest floor characteristics. It is pure, medium-bodied, and elegant, much in the style of its bigger sibling. Drink it over the next 6-7 years.
