Distinctive Elegance Amidst Climatic Tensions

The year 1996 was characterised by an erratic climate, imbuing the harvest with a dance of tension and elegance. The cool, damp spells were met with brilliant sunshine, providing the grapes at the venerable Chateau Pape Clement estate with a challenge that they seemed to rise to with vigour. It is this vintage's ability to harness such variable conditions that sets it apart as one which holds a particular enchantment for investment consideration.

An Oenophilic Odyssey: 1996 Pape Clement's Profile

Upon decanting, the wine reveals a menagerie of olfactory nuances: a prelude to cassis, laced with the subtle whispers of truffle and cigar box—an aromatic collage characteristic of mature Pessac-Leognan. On the palate, it articulates a fine balance between power and finesse, with resolved tannins escorting the dark fruit core towards an enduring finish that echoes the gravelly terroir from which it arose. This level of complexity emerged after years of patient cellaring, now positioning this vintner's craft as one of the most intriguing options for deepening one's cellar or portfolio.

For those vested in wine investment, engaging with the 1996 Pape Clement is more than a transaction; it is embarking upon an oenological odyssey—an adventure where mature Bordeaux wines offer sensorial reward paired with fiscal prudence. A potential cornerstone for collectors who appreciate wines that can both stand as testament to history and evolve gracefully.

In conclusion, with each swirl in the glass, the 1996 Pape Clement from Chateau Pape Clement remains an encapsulation of a year when rhythm and resilience were key—attributes now beautifully entwined within this exceptional offering from Pessac-Leognan.

A great wine that has put on considerable weight and continues to show more and more depth and complexity, the dark plum/ruby colored 1996 Pape Clement has a gorgeous nose of barbecue spices intermixed with black currant, plum, coffee, and a hint of white chocolate. The wine is exceptionally rich, fill-bodied, and a fabulous success, particularly in the Pessac-Leognan sector. The tannin is sweet and the wine full-bodied, with tremendous richness and length. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020. Last tasted, 4/02.

The '96 Pape-Clement has a very deep colour with brick rim. The nose is very leafy and decayed with intense dried tobacco leaf aromas, but without the requisite fruit intensity to back it up. With time there is a touch of tealeaf and a faint wisp of black olive compote. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly abrasive tannins and seems rather angular in the mouth. Moderate fruit concentration, very leafy and masculine with cedar and tobacco dominated the austere finish. It is difficult to see this wine ever improving. Tasted July 2010.
