1998 Clinet from Chateau Clinet, Pomerol, Bordeaux

The 1998 vintage in Bordeaux remains lauded amongst collectors and enthusiasts alike, and the 1998 Clinet from Chateau Clinet in Pomerol stands as a testament to the sterling qualities that this year encapsulates. This is a wine of prestige, crafted in a region synonymous with exceptional Merlot-driven wines, and represents an astute selection for both the seasoned and nascent fine wine investor.

Exceptional Provenance Meets Optimal Conditions

Pomerol's 1998 season was characterised by climatic generosity; a serene and adequate spring gave way to a summer marked by warmth and well-timed rain. This confluence of conditions heralded optimal ripeness, allowing the Merlot grapes of Chateau Clinet's vineyards to express themselves with both power and finesse. In my extensive experience, it is this balance that signals a Pomerol vintage with notable potential for longevity – a critical factor for investment consideration.

A Tasting Journey: The Hallmark of 1998

In tasting the 1998 Clinet, one is immediately enveloped by its rich tapestry of aromatics – truffles, black cherries, and a hint of tobacco – a triumvirate indicative of Pomerol's hallowed terroir. On the palate, this fine vintage exudes blackberry compote interlaced with subtle notes of espresso and earthy undertones. The integration of tannins is seamless, providing structure without overpowering, leading to a prolonged finish which reassures the taster of its splendid maturation prospects.

Investment Insight: Distinguishing the 1998 Clinet

For investors eyeing the robust market for blue-chip Bordeaux wines, the selection of a vintage such as the 1998 Clinet is imperative. It distinguishes itself not only through its exceptional condition at over two decades but also in its capacity to intrigue palates whilst sitting handsomely in one's collection. The pedigree of Chateau Clinet – combined with this specific vintage's composition – advocates for an appreciable place within any diversified wine investment portfolio.

It is with sincere conviction that I view the acquisition of a bottle or case of 1998 Clinet from Chateau Clinet as a discerning choice for those yearning to possess a slice of Bordeaux's illustrious vinicultural history while simultaneously securing an asset with credentials steeped in both sensory delight and financial acumen.

I had high hopes for this wine prior to bottling, but Clinet often goes through a reduced, awkward stage following bottling. The 1998 reveals a dense, thick-looking purple color, as well as a closed bouquet. With coaxing, notes of damp earth, spicy new oak, truffles, blackberry and plum fruit emerge. Dense, with jagged tannin, considerable power, and a roasted, chocolatey character, this wine has not yet meshed together. I had hoped it would be less disjointed, but I still feel there is a strong likelihood that it will deserve an outstanding score. However, patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020.

Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index's Clinet vertical. This has a ripe, forward bouquet with plum, a touch of blackcurrant wine gums, becoming more herbaceous with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a sinewy entry, dark fruits such as blackberry and pomegranate, Provencal herbs, a touch of bacon fat and orange rind with firm tannins. The new oak is still very prominent and does not seem to have enmeshed within the fabric of the wine over the last two years. Tasted February 2011.
