2004 La Conseillante from Chateau La Conseillante, Pomerol, Bordeaux
Among the pantheon of Bordeaux's stellar offerings, the 2004 La Conseillante from Chateau La Conseillante is a vintage that merits particular attention. The year 2004 in Pomerol was a compelling one; with meteorological whims bestowing grace upon the grapevines, it yielded fruit that was ripe and abundant in character, leading to creations that provide both opulence and structure. Embarking on a vinous exploration of this particular vintage sheds light on a nuanced chapter in Chateau La Conseillante's illustrious narrative.
Finesse and Expression: The Hallmarks of the Vintage
The climatic conditions of 2004 circumvented the extremes; this was a year without the scorching heatwaves or devastating frosts, which sometimes besiege the region. Harvest arrived under clear skies, offering unsurpassed balance in phenolic and sugar content — a bequest from the vine to the vintner. This equilibrium is echoed in every sip of 2004 La Conseillante, where an intricacy of flavour deftly interplays with tannic precision.
A Nectar Imbued With Time's Elegance
On the palate, this iteration from Chateau La Conseillante is an effusion of mature dark berries flirting with hints of truffle and subtle oak, retaining a freshness that belies its years. The texture suggests silk woven by time – caressing yet authoritative – underscoring the benefits of years gently cradling this vintage in cellars. Refined undertones of violet and liquorice contribute to a finish that stretches languidly towards the horizon, suggesting that 2004 La Conseillante remains an astute choice for wine investors discerning enough to recognise its quiet power and finesse.
This distinguished Pomerol presents an alluring proposition for portfolios, indicating that connoisseurs who achieve possession are not merely investing in bottles but acquiring scrolls of vinicultural lore that speak eloquently of their season. As longevity continues to enhance its elegance, the 2004 La Conseillante stands tall amongst peers as a noble testament to both winemaker's craft and nature's patrimony.

Scores and tasting notes
The 2004 La Conseillante has put on weight since I tasted it from barrel. Made in an atypically structured, tight style, the deep ruby/blue-tinged 2004 offers up sweet mulberry, cassis, licorice, and roasted herb aromas as well as flavors. This medium-bodied, moderately tannic effort will benefit from 1-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 12-15 years. It is somewhat reminiscent of the 1999. This is a very good wine, but the 2005 and 2006 blow it away – qualitatively speaking!
