The evocative terroir of Pomerol never fails to enchant, and the 1986 La Fleur Petrus from Chateau La Fleur Petrus is a consummate example of this famed region's prowess. The '86 vintage emerges as one worthy of investor’s attention, meticulously crafted by the venerated estate whose roots intertwine deeply with the very essence of Pomerol.
A Testament to Time: The Elegance of Maturation
As we traverse through the decades, it becomes increasingly evident that the 1986 La Fleur Petrus encapsulates a chapter of Bordeaux's winemaking history that connoisseurs yearn to revisit. Upon my most recent tasting, I was greeted by a symphony of mature flavours; a testament to the enduring nature of Pomerol’s crafts. The nose beckons with a bouquet where dark fruits meld into tertiary notes of truffle and earth – a hallmark of well-aged Merlot.
An Ode to the Unique Vintage Conditions
The peculiar climate conditions of 1986 gave rise to a remarkably structured wine. In this particular year, an extended ripening period was sanctioned by a benevolent autumn, allowing for exceptional phenolic development within the grapes. This idiosyncratic developmental phase has conferred upon the wine a backbone of refined tannins that now gracefully support its complex array of flavours.
In the palate, one may discern the luxuriant finesse typical of Chateau La Fleur Petrus, embodied by this particular vintage’s deep plum and cassis characters that cavort with savoury spice and an endearing hint of leather. Its balance is impeccable; it achieves a commendable equilibrium between intensity and elegance – retaining vibrancy in spite of its maturity.
For those considering the venture into fine wine investment, the 1986 La Fleur Petrus carries an extraordinary potential not only as part of a diversified portfolio but also as a sensory delight. Its longevity suggests that it will continue to evolve, offering glimpses into the intricacies that only time can bestow upon Bordeaux’s liquid artistry.
Closing Notes on a Worthy Investment and Pleasure
In conclusion, this offering from Chateau La Fleur Petrus stands as an enthralling chapter in Pomerol’s annals. The vintage specificity alongside its current stage of development positions the 1986 La Fleur Petrus as an alluring proposition for collectors and investors alike – one with distinguishing attributes that are poised to seduce the palate while potentially appreciating in value within their vinous treasury.

A slightly deeper colour than the Petrus. A sweet nose but with less complexity and delineation: red cherry, a touch of cranberry and cigar box. The palate is medium-bodied, rather 'fluffy', lacking delineation and vigor. But there is a natural charm to it, unassuming, laid back almost. A sweet minerally, bitter cherry and dried orange peel finish. Not bad at all, although it lacks depth and concentration and will not improve. Tasted December 2006. Drink Now
Neal Martin - Wine Journal Jul 2007
A very simple, one-dimensional La Fleur-Petrus that is holding onto life but showing very little depth or concentration. The nose is somewhat muted, but does offer up some dusty, earthy, loamy soil scents intermixed with the smell of underripe tomatoes and Provencal herbs. In the mouth, the wine is attenuated, compact, medium-bodied, and lacking concentration. Anticipated maturity: Now-2010. Last tasted, 3/02.
