The 1986 L'Evangile from Chateau L'Evangile represents not simply a vintage release from one of Bordeaux's formidable estates but rather, a compendium of sensory chronicles scripted in the hallowed terroir of Pomerol. I find myself perennially drawn to the profound articulation of place found within the velvety confines of this lauded bottle.
An Epoch of Excellence: Investing in a Vintage Year
When wine enthusiasts and scrupulous investors alike seek out with keen interest the venerable year of 1986, what they uncover in this L'Evangile is an assemblage that truly embodies the estate’s meticulous care and deep-rooted understanding of their vineyards amidst a climatically favourable season.
A Distinctive Narrative of Terroir and Time
Intimate knowledge of Pomerol's undulating landscape and the unique climatic conditions that define its vintages are paramount. The 1986 vintage emerged triumphant following an exceptionally dry summer, which narrated an illustrious chapter marked by concentrated flavours and robust tannins. In the case of 1986 L'Evangile, these attributes converge in a symphony of complexity; plump merlot grapes offering rich plum notes, ably supported by the structural intricacies delivered by cabernet franc – a textural juxtaposition that compels contemplation with each taste.
This was a period where meticulous winemaking met gracious Mother Nature, resulting in a wine that greets the palate with an expansive bouquet; hints of truffle and liquorice interlace with aged leather and dark cherry tones. On decanting, it unveils subtle tertiary aromas with a hint of spicy cedar – signalling not only maturity but also a lingering vitality ready to engage with the olfactory senses of any discerning nose.
In conclusion, for oenophiles contemplating a wise allocation to their vinous portfolio or seeking to envelop their senses in this vintage's rarified embrace, 1986 L'Evangile from Chateau L'Evangile offers a narrative woven from Bordeaux's rich tapestry. It stands testament to an age where wine transcended mere libation and became a chronicle etched into the annals of Pomerol's esteemed winemaking legacy.

Scores and tasting notes
Very herbaceous notes intermixed with loamy soil scents and a shortage of sweet fruit make for a very differently styled l'Evangile. The wine is somewhat awkward, clumsy, with some hard edges, and the high tannins desiccating the finish. My best instincts suggest that it needs to be drunk up before it loses more fruit and charm. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 3/02.
Robert Parker Jr - Bordeaux Book, 4th Edition Jan 2003
Tasted at the property, the 1986 L'Evangile had a rather muted bouquet that did not really "sing" from the glass. It felt a little mute with reluctant licorice-tinged black fruit, savory in style but lacking vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft entry, quite rustic and old school, a touch of white pepper and game, smoky towards the toffee-tinged finish. This should be drunk up.
