In the pantheon of Bordeaux wine, the 2007 vintage has been oft overlooked—shadowed by its more celebrated peers. Yet there lie gems within this year's yield, not least of which is the 2007 L'Evangile from Chateau L'Evangile. This vintage emerged from a year that could best be described as a viticultural rollercoaster, where an uneven growing season ultimately gave way to wines with unexpected charm and finesse.
A Study in Resilience and Refinement
The 2007 vintage in Pomerol was marked by climatic challenges that required mastery over the vineyard and judicious selection in the winery. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc of Chateau L'Evangile rose admirably to these demands, revealing a wine that encapsulates both the resilience of the terroir and the deft hand of its makers.
The 2007 L'Evangile from Chateau L'Evangile encapsulates the essence of Pomerol's mercurial climate, resulting in a nuanced tableau of ripe blackberry fruit interlaced with notes of truffle and a touch of iron—an ode to the clay soils that cradle the vines. On the palate, those same black fruits persist, softened around the edges with secondary flavours of cedar wood and slight cigar box complexities developing through maturation.
An Insight into Investment
As a beacon for fine wine investors seeking both rarity and quality, this particular vintage brings forth an opportunity to acquire a piece of Bordeaux history. Its ageing potential is underscored by its steady evolution—a most favourable attribute for those looking to enhance their cellars or portfolios.
The 2007 L'Evangile from Chateau L'Evangile boasts a certain distinction amidst its peers from Pomerol. Delicate yet deep, crafted in adversity yet flourishing over time, this is a wine that reflects the idiosyncrasies of its year while holding steadfast the timeless elegance promised by its illustrious terroir.
In summary, while it may stray from the limelight garnished by so-called 'great' vintages, the 2007 offering from Chateau L'Evangile exhibits an intriguing complexity that belies its initial underdog status. Savvy investors and connoisseurs will appreciate how beautifully it encapsulates both a moment in time and the undying artistry of Bordeaux winemaking.

Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. Jean-Pascale Vazart is overseeing some wonderful wines from this Pomerol stalwart and even off-vintages such as 2007 are no exception. It has fine delineation on the nose with macerated dark cherries, creme de cassis, blueberry compote and a touch of crushed stone. Fine delineation. The palate has a rounded, sensual entry, slightly lower acidity than others, caressing sumptuous dark cherry and cassis fruit towards the finish that lingers long in the mouth. Irresistible. Tasted January 2011.

This dark ruby-colored, medium-weight l'Evangile exhibits creamy blackberry and raspberry fruit, a superficial attack, but plenty of charm, silky tannin, and low acidity make for a delicious wine to drink over the next 7-8 years.
