The 2004 Trotanoy from Chateau Trotanoy, Pomerol, Bordeaux

In the pantheon of Bordeaux vintages, the 2004 Trotanoy from Chateau Trotanoy distinguishes itself with emblematic grace. This vintage from the revered region of Pomerol stands as a testament to the winemaking prowess that adeptly captured the year's unique climatic narrative.

A Resplendent Vintage in the Shadow of Giants

While perhaps eclipsed by the legendary 2005 and hailed 2000 vintages, the 2004 Trotanoy deftly demonstrates that quality is not solely the providence of the most lauded years. Rising convincingly, this vintage encapsulates a triumph of viticulture in lesser-heralded conditions, offering sophisticated investors a rather splendid opportunity for discerning palates and portfolios alike.

Meticulous Craftmanship Shaping an Elegant Year

The year 2004 reveals itself in this Trotanoy with resolute charm—a year that delivered an initially tentative spring but matured into a harmonious growing season. Mildew and frost threats were skillfully navigated, leading to harvests that manifested the vineyard's enduring resilience and giving rise to wines of substantial finesse.

On swirling the glass, it unfolds with aromatic layers of black truffles entwined within dark cherries—echoes of Pomerol's terroir—and unravels with whispers of cigar box and a hint of menthol. This is a wine that articulates its maturity with confidence yet promises longevity, supported by tannins that have evolved from their once austere beginnings to become genteel and inviting.

The palate encounters an ensemble of well-integrated flavours, from ripe plums to subtle earthy undertones, all underpinned by a mineral streak unique to this vintage. The 2004 Trotanoy grows more compelling as it lingers on the palate; an intricate dance of power and elegance.

In summary, this iteration from Chateau Trotanoy gracefully defies generational overshadowing, parading its virtues as one of Pomerol's understated yet quintessential offerings. The intelligent investor or collector looking beyond the immediate allure of grandeur will find in this 2004 Trotanoy a prudent addition to their assemblage—one that elegantly asserts its place in the lineage of Bordeaux's fine wines.

Like Certan de May, this has a beguiling nose, though more broody and backward. Blackberry, earthy and a touch of green pepper. The palate is well defined, very concentrated with a fresh, harmonious quality. Masculine, intellectual. I have not tasted many recent vintages of Trotanoy, but if they are as good as this, I must rectify that immediately. A great wine. Tasted April 2005.

While muscular, hard tannins are cause for concern, the structured, broodingly backward 2004 Trotanoy possesses plenty of meaty black cherry, forest floor, and damp earth characteristics. If everything comes together, it may merit an outstanding score, but at present, the sharpness/astringency of the tannin is troubling. Patience will definitely be required.. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.
