2008 Chapelle d'Ausone, Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, France

The 2008 vintage greets connoisseurs as a particularly enlightening chapter in the storied tapestry of Chateau Ausone. The second wine, 2008 Chapelle d'Ausone, weaves an intricate web of Saint-Émilion's noble terroir, prevalent even amid the challenges of a season marked by climatic whimsy.

A Deft Touch in Testing Times

Harvested from the limestone-rich slopes that have become a hallmark of Ausone's exceptionalism, the 2008 Chapelle d'Ausone speaks volumes of its lineage while embodying its unique temporal spirit. This was a year when the winemakers' prowess was tested, calling for an astute application of their craft due to variable weather that culminated in a sumptuously concentrated harvest.

Investment Potential of the Vintage

For those considering fine wine as a sophisticated component of their investment portfolio, the 2008 Chapelle d'Ausone presents an intriguing proposition. As with all vintages emanating from this distinguished house, it shows remarkable finesse that bellies its label as a second wine. Lower yields due to selectivity in 2008 have resulted in limited quantities, bolstering its scarcity and potential for appreciation.

Tasting Notes and Maturation

The 2008’s palate is laden with a black cherry compote, backed by subtle truffle undertones and a whisper of sweet tobacco – distinct to this year's narrative. Its maturation has ushered in supple tannins aligned with harmonious acidity that together promise continued development, albeit now entering its plateau of maturity with grace.

In conclusion, the 2008 Chapelle d'Ausone offers investors and aficionados alike not just a taste but a discourse on the story of the vintage – its peaks, valleys and ultimately, its triumphs. Its current state is enchantingly approachable whilst still bequeathing potential for further complexity; an articulate testament to the mastery at Chateau Ausone.

A beautiful perfume of black raspberries, black cherries, black currants, licorice, damp earth, truffles and asphalt soars from this deep, full-bodied 2008. The tannins are sweet, the concentration level impressive and the wine is round and generous. It is ideal for drinking over the next 15-20 years.

Tasted ex-chateau and single blind in Southwold. Like the Grand Vin, this samples was showing some reduction on the nose. The palate is sweet on the entry, quite fleshy and supple with a generous confectionary finish. Very polished and classy, I suspect a less reductive bottle would be very fine. Tasted January 2012.
