2008 Le Petit Cheval
By Chateau Cheval Blanc
The 2008 Le Petit Cheval from Château Cheval Blanc, Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux
In the canon of Bordeaux vintages, the year 2008 often seems to be whispered rather than shouted about—yet in this sotto voce we find the articulate 2008 Le Petit Cheval from Château Cheval Blanc, a testament to both resilience and grace under climactic pressure. As the younger sibling to the fabled Cheval Blanc, this vintage was nurtured under conditions that teased out a unique poise from the Saint-Émilion terroir.
Vision amid variability: The making of 2008
As spring frosts gave way to an unsettled summer, it was the seasoned patience and precision of Château Cheval Blanc's team that shielded this blend from unruliness. By steering clear of what could have been a middling harvest, they coaxed forth an assemblage where Merlot and Cabernet Franc dance in measured harmony.
The 2008 Le Petit Cheval belies its year's tumult with a gait both assertive and soft-footed. The Merlot's plum and licorice notes pirouette around the Cabernet Franc's signature raspberry and subtle herbaceous qualities, culminating in a nuanced performance on the palate.
Investing in nuance: The value of 2008 Le Petit Cheval
Wine investors may often chase the flamboyance of hotter vintages, but to overlook the quiet confidence of 2008 would be to ignore this wine's rightful place in a diversified portfolio. It enters its drinking window emboldened by time yet carries the potential for further graceful aging. Its complexity is unveiled unpretentiously, making it a discerning addition for those who appreciate stealth over spectacle.
The vintage awaits its audience—a receptive palate for its story of triumph over adversity. With its current trajectory in both maturity and market appreciation, the 2008 Le Petit Cheval from Château Cheval Blanc unfolds as an elegant narrative in the long history of Saint-Émilion, capturing attention amidst whispers of potential and promising engagement for those who listen closely.

In closure, when musing on the investment-worthy wines from Bordeaux, the 2008 Le Petit Cheval should not be underestimated. The 2008 Le Petit Cheval (65% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot) is a light, but not a wimpy wine. It is more cedary and evolved, with spice box, tobacco leaf, licorice, and red and black fruits in a medium-bodied, classic style that should drink nicely for 10-12 years.

I am surprised by the quality of the second wine this year, considering the difficulty of the vintage. Pierre Lurton, president of Cheval Blanc, said that they have really tried to improve the quality of the second wine, and it shows. There is lots of blueberry and chocolate character

Tasted ex-chateau and single blind in Southwold. This is broody and animally on the nose, touches of undergrowth and dark brambly fruit. Tarry notes developing. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, a touch of piquancy but there seems to be some heavy-handed oak on the finish. Perhaps this will improve with further bottle age? Tasted January 2012.
