Perched upon the upper reaches of Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau, the 2002 La Mondotte from Chateau La Mondotte bears witness to a vintage that has generated much discussion amongst seasoned oenophiles. The year 2002 was a challenging one for Bordeaux, with variable conditions requiring meticulous vineyard management and a deft hand in the cellars. Strength Through Adversity: A Distinct Expression

A lesser-known jewel in Saint-Émilion's vinous crown, Chateau La Mondotte proved its resilience in 2002. The vintage shines through with an articulate expression of the terroir, where others may have faltered. For astute wine investors and aficionados alike, this represents an opportunity to appreciate the triumphs that can arise from less lauded years.

Climatic Challenges Turned to Triumph

While the 2002 season presented vignerons with hurdles - dampness and cooler temperatures - it also allowed for fruit of exceptional concentration in select pockets. The 2002 La Mondotte is a testament to this concentration, revealing a mature palette typical of its prestigious status. It glides gracefully across the palate with layers of dark cherry, truffle, and subtle hints of tobacco – each note a reminder of the capacity for greatness even in less bountiful years.

The depth of flavour is further enhanced by judicious oak ageing which bestows upon this wine an elegant structure and velvety tannins, leading to a long and impressive finish. As it stands today, having reached a glorious plateau of development, the 2002 La Mondotte from Chateau La Mondotte offers a unique investment potential due to its singular provenance and story.

Sipping on the 2002 La Mondotte invites reflection on a vintage that crafted wines for the thoughtful investor – fine bottles showcasing the prowess of their maker to usher excellence from adversity. It holds a special place as an outperformer of the year, warranting attention for those seeking depth and finesse in their Saint-Émilion collections.

A decidedly lighter-styled wine than the 2003, this elegant, medium-bodied effort from La Mondotte boasts a deep ruby/purple-tinged color and some sweet mulberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with a hint of white chocolate and espresso. Stylish but ultimately lacking great depth and persistence, this wine should be drunk over the next 10-15 years.
