2007 Troplong Mondot

By Chateau Troplong Mondot

2007 Troplong Mondot from Chateau Troplong Mondot, Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux

The 2007 vintage in Bordeaux is often unfairly overshadowed by the opulent 2005 and the classic 2009 and 2010 vintages. Yet, for the oenophile with a discerning palate, 2007 harboured some pleasant surprises, keenly demonstrated by the 2007 Troplong Mondot from Chateau Troplong Mondot. This vintage articulates a Bordeaux année with an idiosyncratic narrative—one where a cool and damp August was saved by a dry and sunny September.

A testament to the deftness of winemaking at Chateau Troplong Mondot, it showcases how precision in viticulture and vinification can surmount meteorological caprice. This wine, emergent from Saint-Émilion's famed limestone terroir, encapsulates the virtue of a vintage often left to linger in the shadows.

A Tasting Odyssey

Tasting the 2007 Trojan Horse of vintages reveals a narrative of resilience; a concoction that bridges vivacity with maturity. There’s an engaging tension between the ripe blackberry and plum fruit against a backdrop of graphite and forest floor—all enveloped in the loving arms of polished tannins. What strikes one most is how this wine has evolved gracefully, developing an aromatic tapestry woven with tertiary notes, all still supple enough to suggest a further unfolding over time.

A contemplative wine investor will recognise the acumen in selecting such distinctive iterations from Bordeaux. The vintages like 2007 often afford an enhanced authenticity, offering a completer picture of a château's repertoire and resilience. The 2007 Troplong Mondot certainly merits attention as one such engaging investment proposition.

In summarising, this vintage stands as an exemplar of skill triumphing over circumstantial challenge—an estate’s commitment transfiguring what could have been an underwhelming year into a quietly confident and complex bottle that continues to reward those who seek insight beyond the reputed years.

Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. The Troplong Mondot 2007 is much more reserved on the nose that I expected. Very well defined with more mineralite showing through. Wonderful lift and expression. The palate is taut on the entry with tensile tannins, very good acidity and tension, very focused towards the finish with blackberry, cassis and a touch of spice, such panache on the finish. Tasted January 2011.

A brilliant 2007 from proprietor Christine Valette, this blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon was produced from yields of 27.5 hectoliters per hectare, and hit 13.5% natural alcohol. An inky/blue/purple color is followed by an extraordinary perfume of acacia flowers, blueberries, blackberry liqueur, graphite, and smoke. As the wine sits in the glass, it blossoms beautifully to display a raspberry-infused, rich personality with tremendous opulence, a layered mouthfeel, elegance, superb purity, sweet tannins, and low acidity. Drink this beauty now and over the next 10-15 years.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Troplong-Mondot has long been a Saint Emilion that has surpassed the vintage. It has a sophisticated bouquet with crushed strawberry, fresh mint and subtle gamy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannin on the entry, the fruit a little darker and the personality a little broodier than the Canon-la-Gaffelière, gently fanning out on the almost Pomerol-like finish. Probably à point, but it will give another decade's worth of pleasure. Tasted February 2017.
