2017 Troplong Mondot from Chateau Troplong Mondot, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France

As the 2017 vintage unfurls its wings, the grandeur of Chateau Troplong Mondot's offerings come to the fore, presenting investors and connoisseurs alike with a gem hailing from the limestone-rich terroir of Saint-Emilion. This particular year stands as a testament to the resilience of a well-tended vineyard against climatic whims. Despite the frost that challenged Bordeaux in the spring, Troplong Mondot emerged practically unscathed, owing to its prime location on one of the highest points of Saint-Emilion.

A Vintage Defined by Elegance and Precision

Noteworthy is the finesse with which the 2017 Troplong Mondot encapsulates its unique circumstances; a cooler than average growing season has sculpted a profile where freshness takes centre stage. This vintage reveals an elegant complexity – a ballet of ripe blackberries, plums, and a whisper of violets on the nose, leading to a poised palate blessed with the right dose of oak. The wine delivers angular tannins that promise graceful ageing potential - a distinguishing factor critical in appraising fine wine investments.

Climactic Resilience Meets Artisan Mastery

The wine's structure is buttressed by an acidity that vivifies the deep fruit core, an acidity that moulds potential into longevity. The adept vinification employed at Chateau Troplong Mondot marries modernity with tradition. Here, precision-led extraction and temperature-controlled fermentation ensure that each varietal's voice contributes harmoniously to the 2017 ensemble. A judicious use of new French oak barrels bestows a well-judged patina of spice and toast.

Indisputably, the prowess of Chateau Troplong Mondot shines through in this perennially undervalued vintage. It embodies resilience under adverse conditions while maintaining the chateau’s hallmark opulence edged with refinement. For savvy collectors understanding value growth dynamics in fine wine investment, this edition possesses ample attributes for long-term maturation poise.

In summary, the 2017 Troplong Mondot is not merely another stellar creation; it is an articulate expression from an estate that sits confidently at the pinnacle of its craft. This vintage mirrors an autumnal park scene - once exuberant with colour, now matured into deep-toned elegance awaiting appreciative eyes.

The 2017 Troplong Mondot is easily one of the wines of the vintage. New CEO Aymeric de Gironde (formerly of Cos d’Estournel) and consulting oenologist Thomas Duclos are masterminding a remarkable new chapter in the life of Troplong Mondot. A major stylistic shift in the direction of freshness and energy has resulted in a positively stunning Troplong Mondot endowed with tremendous depth and vibrant. A rush of black cherry, plum, mocha, new leather and spice builds as this gorgeous Saint-Émilion shows off its breeding and total class. The blend is 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc .

Troplong Mondot saw hardly any frost—less than 10%. The 2017 Troplong Mondot is blended of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc. Very deep purple-black in color, it offers up a cedar chest, cinnamon stick and cloves-laced nose with a core of crème de cassis, blackberry compote and preserved plums plus wafts of licorice, violets and sandalwood. Full-bodied, concentrated and sporting a firm frame of velvety tannins, it has a lively line lifting the densely packed fruit, finishing long and on a compelling savory note.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Troplong Mondot is a little closed to begin, soon unfurling to reveal expanding notions of warm blackberries, wild blueberries and licorice plus hints of smoked meats, black olives, pencil shavings and truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed mouth-coating black fruits, exploding into loads of earthy sparks with a soft, velvety texture from ripe, rounded tannins. It finishes with spectacular freshness and loads of layers.

Good bramble and anise notes are matched by blackberry and black cherry compote flavors. A fresh savory streak underscores the finish. Sneakily long, with an emphasis on freshness.—J.M.

The 2017 Troplong Mondot, the first under the new regime of former Cos d’Estournel manager Aymeric de Gironde, has a gorgeous bouquet with well defined red and black fruit, hints of dark chocolate and crushed flowers, a subtle mineral undercurrent that becomes more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is a much fresher and balanced style of Troplong Mondot that tended to be over-egged in the past The terroir is much more evident where it counts – in the glass. There is a pleasant spiciness that comes through with aeration and a touch of sense of tension from start to finish. If this represents how this estate will continue, then the new era is going to be festooned with some exemplary wines.

Composed of 100% Merlot, the second label of Troplong Mondot - 2017 Mondot - is very deep garnet-purple in color with an expressive nose of plum preserves, blueberry pie, blackberry tart and Chinese five spice with touches of cigar box and mocha. The palate is full-bodied, rich and packed with black fruit preserves and spice layers, with a plush backbone and the freshness coming through on the finish.
