A Vintage Crowned by Nature

The harvest season for the 1999 Sauternes vintage was serenaded by autumnal mists and sun-kissed afternoons—an ideal scenario for the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which concentrates the grape's natural sugars and flavours. The result in bottle—a symphonic blend of opulent sweetness tinged with enlivening acidity—is a testament to nature's beneficial intercessions that year.

Tasting the 1999 Rieussec elucidates layers of candied apricot, honeyed fig, and subtle almond—each note interweaving with finesse. The palate is enveloped in a velvety texture, replete with vibrant acidity that ushers a finish as enduring as it is ethereal.

The value appreciation potential for collectors is notable when considering the sophistication imbued within each decanter of the 1999 Rieussec. An articulate Sauternes such as this promises to enhance any sophisticated wine portfolio, appeasing both aficionados searching for liquid history and astute investors pursuing blue-chip assets.

Tasted at an off-line lunch at La Trompette. The Rieussec 1999 has a lovely, vibrant nose with notes of grapefruit, Japanese yuzu and wild honey all with fine delineation and that vanilla-tinged patina one often finds with this estate. The palate is well balanced with a vibrant entry: attractive notes of white peach and honeycomb, leading to a very harmonious, waxy texture finish. This is an impressive off-vintage Rieussec drinking perfectly now, although it has the weight to keep. Tasted June 2011.
