By Chateau Rieussec

2003 Rieussec from Chateau Rieussec, Sauternes, Bordeaux

Embarking upon the 2003 Rieussec from Chateau Rieussec, one encounters a vintage that has become a storied page in the annals of Sauternes. Justly regarded as one of the more opulent expressions in recent memory, this wine is an amalgamation of benign climatic generosity and cellar artisanship, yielded by a summer remembered for its relentless heat.

A Tapestry of Elements: The 2003 Vintage

While most of Bordeaux grappled with extraordinary temperatures that year, Sauternes reaped bountiful rewards, conjuring exquisite botrytis and optimal ripeness across its vineyards. The 2003 Rieussec reflects this confluence splendidly; it stands as a testament to the adaptability and resilience that distinguishes the revered terroir of Chateau Rieussec.

The wine greets one with an aromatic treasury - candied apricots intertwined with honeyed acacia and subtle ginger nuances play across the olfactory senses. On decanting, hints of spiced pear and toasted almonds emerge, punctuating its illustrious bouquet. To sip it invites a profusion of flavours befitting a symphony score.

Oenological Narrative: A Reflection in Each Sip

Texturally elegant yet profound – like honeyed silk gliding over the palate – the 2003 vintage expresses an impeccable counterpoint between lush sweetness and vital acidity. This balance is critical, preserving not just immediate pleasure but promising impeccable longevity. An enduring masterpiece – perhaps one that shall grace collectors' vernaculars amongst fine wine investments carrying both cachet and substance.

Serving not merely as a testament to enological excellence, this fine potion also evolves into a captivating narrative for those attuned to the lore of vintages. In each glass of the 2003 Rieussec from Chateau Rieussec lies not just a beverage but an journey through history's supple embrace.

Summation: The Investment Eminence of 2003 Rieussec

In summing up, indulge me as I propose that embedding one's portfolio with bottles of 2003 Rieussec would not solely signify acquiring sterling nectar but rather an iconographic piece of Bordeaux's illustrious narrative. As time weaves its inexorable spell, these bottles stand to resonate ever more ardently with both connoisseurs and investors alike. Thus, inscribing such an offering within one's wine investment repertoire emerges as a sagacious move well worth counsel.

Rieussec is one of the benchmark Sauternes. And 2003 is a reference vintage. Beautiful aromas of dried apricots and honey turn to a sweet palate of apple pie, caramel and dried apricots. Layered and dense. It's like biting into a tarte tartin!

Ex-chateau bottle tasted blind in Sauternes. The Rieussec '03 has a strong Barsac like aromas

The 2003 Rieussec is a blend of 91% Semillon, 6% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle picked between 17 September and 1 October. Much deeper in color than other vintages, it has a mature, almost tropical mango and passion fruit nose that feels a little one-dimensional. The palate is medium-bodied and smooth on the entry, a little waxy in texture with nutmeg and dried honey notes on the mature, Tokaji-like finish. Given my previous remarks, I wonder if this Rieussec is in decline, especially as vintages of similar age appear to be prospering. Approach with caution. Tasted April 2016.
