2002 Calon-Segur from Chateau Calon-Segur, St-Estephe, Bordeaux
One of the more charmed years for Bordeaux, the 2002 vintage has long been synonymous with grace under pressure. At the heart of this narrative stands the 2002 Calon-Segur from Chateau Calon-Segur, a wine that splendidly encapsulates the resilience and elegance of St-Estephe’s terroir amidst challenging conditions.
Investment Merits: A Timely Sojourn
As wine investors well know, fine wine is not merely about immediate pleasure, but also about potential and timing. The 2002 Calon-Segur remains a commendable investment proposition, its value ripening like the tannins within its folds over time.
Climatic Dance: Resilience Meets Refinement
Bordeaux’s 2002 vintage was a Pas de Deux of nature's whimsy and vintners’ expertise. Despite the damp beginnings, an Indian summer saved the harvest, allowing for an admirable display of viticulture prowess at Chateau Calon-Segur. This twist of fate is beautifully articulated in the glass; a meshwork of refined tannins paired with the vibrant fruit accents that speak to astute winemaking and careful selection.
The 2002 Calon-Segur presents itself with a quieter confidence; it's a study in controlled intensity. In its bouquet lie whispers of blackcurrant, tobacco and earth – a tryst between primary and tertiary aromas that echoes matured sophistication without foregoing vivacity.
On the palate, one discovers layers – cassis underscores a plinth of herbaceousness and minerality. The wine engages with its medium body yet retains a persistent structure, reflecting St-Estephe’s quintessential muscularity blended seamlessly with poise that only years in perfect cellar conditions can achieve.
In summation, this vintage embodies a narrative of triumph over adversity, placing it among the venerable collectibles from Bordeaux. A tasting will unearth these tales in each sip, reflecting both history and potential – thus making 2002 Calon-Segur from Chateau Calon-Segur a shrewd addition to any discerning investor's portfolio.

Tasted blind at Farr's 2002 Bordeaux tasting. Good wine, good wine Mrs. G. Very impressive definition on the austere nose laced with cigar box, damp earth, blackberry, thyme and black tea. Chewy entry on the palate, firm, bold tannins here with ripe black cherries, redcurrant and sour red cherry. Tannic, slightly muffled on the finish but it has a sense of drive and purpose, yet maintaining an admirable degree of refinement. Tasted October 2009.
Neal Martin - Wine Journal Jan 2010
Deep ruby/purple-tinged, this vintage, a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, is medium-bodied, elegantly-styled with surprisingly sweet tannin, some notes of herbs, plums, black cherries, and currants, a sweet, ripe attack, and a straightforward finish without the power and depth of the finest vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2017.
