2010 Calon-Segur
By Chateau Calon-Segur
2010 Calon-Segur from Chateau Calon-Segur, St-Estephe, Bordeaux
In the annals of Bordeaux's illustrious winemaking history, certain vintages rise above others in their finesse and character. The 2010 vintage from the revered Chateau Calon-Segur is one such example, a beacon of St-Estephe’s excellence. My engagement with Bordeaux's wines spans decades, but the 2010 Calon-Segur holds a distinguished position within this narrative.
Vintage Virtuosity: A Lesson in Elegance
2010 was a defining year for Bordeaux, with climatic conditions approaching near perfection. The season at St-Estephe favoured an unhurried maturation of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, allowing each variety to express its quintessence. Chateau Calon-Segur harnessed this opportunity with masterful vinification that is profoundly showcased in their 2010 Calon-Segur.
A Distinctive Terroir's Triumph
Characteristics distinct to the 2010 vintage are evident upon each encounter with the wine. There’s a remarkable tightness and depth to the tannin structure of this edition, coupled with an acidity that enlivens without overpowering—a convergence of potency and poise seldom achieved in such balance. A bouquet of crème de cassis, crushed violets and subtle hints of tobacco lead into a palate layered with dark fruits, minerality and traces of spice from well-integrated oak ageing. This extraordinary complexity speaks volumes about the terroir and artisanal craftsmanship of Chateau Calon-Segur.
The splendour of the 2010 Calon-Segur echoes through its ageing potential. One could argue it's an essential cornerstone for collectors seeking longevity in their investments. Its performance thus far suggests a steady ascent to an optimum drinking window that could span decades, rewarding those with patience and foresight.
In summary, the 2010 Calon-Segur presents not merely a top-flight investment opportunity; it encapsulates an experience—a testament to a vintage defined by the excellence of its terroir and the deft touch of Chateau Calon-Segur's winemaking artistry.

Sure pure fruit to this red with a minerality and floral undertone. You can smell the warm stones. Full body, with a beautiful depth of fruit and velvety tannins. Dense and balanced. Layered with a light salty and meaty character as well. Great length. Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon. Try in 2017.

The Calon-Segur has a very fragrant bouquet with perfumed raspberry coulis, fresh strawberry, limestone and a hint of dried rose petals - very feminine for Calon-Segur - certainly a Saint Estephe with great breeding. The palate is medium-bodied with superb acidity right from the start. It is taut, tightly coiled, brilliantly focused and though it does possess the bravura of Cos d'Estournel's its precision and linearity is enthralling. Again, there is that graphite note just coming through on the aftertaste. This is classic Saint Estephe and a testament to the late Mme Gasqueton. Tasted November 2012.
Neal Martin - Wine Journal Mar 2013
The 2010 is performing well,. With Cabernet Sauvignon dominating the blend, the wine has a dense plum/purple color along with notes of underbrush, black currants, plum, licorice, smoky charcuterie and some roasted herbs in the background. Full-bodied, moderately tannic and set for an extremely long life, this will not be a wine to please those looking for immediate gratification. Rather, I would suspect this wine will close down even further in bottle and, despite its full-bodied, powerful, massive size, it will need at least a decade of cellaring before it is accessible. This is another 2010 capable of lasting 35-50 years. This property has finally been sold to a syndicate involving a number of different elements, but given the greatness of this terroir, some fresh blood may ultimately push the quality of Calon Segur right up there with the likes of Cos d’Estournel and Chateau Montrose, the two reigning champions of this northern appellation.

Deep garnet colored, the 2010 Calon-Ségur opens with herbal wafts of bay leaves and bouquet garni over a core of warm redcurrants, black cherry compote and warm cassis with touches of damp soil and moss-covered tree bark. The medium to full-bodied palate has firm, chewy tannins and lively acid supporting the herb-laced fruit, finishing a little hard and tart.
